Kevin Smith

'That Guy'

Recommended Posts

I personally love the man (in a complete homosexual way), I spent my last week watching Clerks (twice), Clerks (Original Cut), and Clerks 2 (twice). I also watched all of the special features on the discs. I also just picked up "My Boring-Ass Life" by Kevin Smith, the special features have inspired me that anybody can make a movie, no matter what the budget was.

So Who loves him, and who hates him?

I used to REALLY like Kevin Smith, but yeah... it was just a phase. When Clerks 2 came out I had a contact at the theater and I was able to watch it about 6 or 7 times on the big screen, and some of my favorite all-time movies have come from him (Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Clerks) and I loved the animated series of Clerks... but now, it's just meh.

Clerks is fantastic stuff, the sequal is really good too, but I think a lot of it comes from the nostalgia of the first, as a stand-alone film I can see why people might not 'get' it. Dogma was good, but I think thats the only ones I've seen.

Not a fan of his movies to be honest. However, I was in between classes, I picked up his book at the bookstore (My Boring Ass Life or whatever it's called) and read his blog entries (which is what the entire book is, I'm sure Smith fans know that) for over an hour and came to conclusion he's a pretty cool guy.

So I like him.

I actually... didn't hate Jersey Girl, though it's by far my least favorite thing he's ever worked on. My list thusfar goes as such;

Chasing Amy > Clerks > Clerks: The Animated Series > Clerks II > Mallrats > Dogma > J&SBSB > Jersey Girl

Jersey Girl was a nice film, nothing more, nothing less. I enjoyed it quite a lot.

I, personally adore the guy. I think he's fantastic. Chasing Amy is one of my favourite films ever, Clerks and Clerks II I can never get bored of. Dogma is insanely good, and I'd consider it one of the most clever and cool films ever, Mallrats was pretty good, and I've never seen Jay and Bob Strike Back. The two Q&A DVDs are brilliant, his books are wonderful, and Scott Mosier is a wonderful man.

Overall, Smith is good news in my books.

I love his work. He isn't the best director and I know he admits to that, especially when it comes to action scenes. The dialogue and stories he writes are great though.

I enjoy Clerks II more then the original, but all of his movies are pretty great.

I didn't care for chasing amy, never saw Jersey Girl. Everything else is good.

Also, just tossing this out there:

I'm not your mate, fag!

As an aspiring filmmaker, I respect what he's done and mostly enjoy his movies but he does kinda have plenty of fanboys who claim he's the greatest thing on the planet so I get a bit annoyed by that.

But generally his work is pretty good. I love Dogma and the Clerks movies were pretty good. Like brenchill, I loved Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back when I was younger but the humor's worn off on me now. And I've only see parts of Chasing Amy and Mallrats.

I stayed away from Jersey Girl though. :shifty:

On that topic though...did anybody see when he was a guest on Ebert & Roeper? He ripped into Roeper for giving whatever movie they were reviewing (I forget what it was) a thumbs up but giving Jersey Girl a thumbs down. I'm pretty sure there's a link of it on the Ebert & Roeper site.

I love all the movies minus Jersey Girl, I couldn't get into it. Chasing Amy is my favorite, clerks 2, dogma, cleaks, and then mallrats. Love them all from the askew universe. Although, I cant wait until Zack and Mira Make a porno. I think that going to be awesome I'm hoping.

Smith is great, if a filmmaker that tends to get overrated (as mentioned before). I love all of the movies except Jersey Girl, which was sort of in the middle. But I haven't seen Strikes Back in years nor any of the others so I don't know how they hold up. I do love the SModcast project he does with Scott Mosier from time to time, as they are usually hilarious and sometimes insightful.
