Really great year in music this year. Explanation of my top 10.

Kanye West: fantastic album from head to toe. Production is great, lyrics are stellar, total package.

M.I.A: Hated this album when it was released, but it grew on me fast. Loud, hard and rough in all the right ways.

Beach House: Heard Silver Soul and fell in love. Beautifully crafted summer album.

Gorillaz: amazing pop album. Lots of twists, turns and genres included. Great stuff.

Sleigh Bells: best debut of the year. Great introduction and I can't wait to see what they crank out next.

Kelis: the best mainstream dance album in years. Kelis isn't afraid to experiment

Gil Scott Heron: just a really great, interesting listen. Bit short.

Hot Chip: 7 great to amazing songs, 3 average songs. Could have been a classic but didn't go the extra mile.

Yeasayer: very weird. Best description I heard about them - Rihanna gone experimental.

Kid Cudi: weird, self indulgent, hollow mess, but I still love it.

I liked Old World Lies better, but it's still a really swell record. The recut of 'Insects' is longer and way different from the original with some of the brass sections padded out and the clarinet added. Their sound is definitely much bigger on this album and has more of an orchestral feel. Awesome band to see live, they're awfully nice and put on a very fun show with demands for weird crowd participation.

This is tough, but thankfully Wikipedia helped me remember all the releases. And also all the music I still got to check out!

January: Contra by Vampire Weekend, Of the Blue Colour of the Sky by OK Go

February: Odd Blood by Yeasayer

March: Tourist History by Two Door Cinema Club, American Ghetto by Portugal. The Man, Broken Bells by Broken Bells, Congratulations by MGMT

April: Forgiveness Rock Record by Broken Social Scene, Treats by Sleigh Bells, Brothers by The Black Keys

June: Barbara by We Are Scientists

August: The Suburbs by Arcade Fire

September: Lonely Avenue by Ben Folds and Nick Hornsby, Invented by Jimmy Eat World

October: Belle & Sebastian Write About Love by Belle & Sebastian

Unknown: Vision Revision by Architecture in Helsinki, Fleet Foxes by Fleet Foxes

Still gotta check out the new Massive Attack, deadmau5, Kayne West, and Jamiroquai.

Tourist History is probably my favorite at the moment.

Edit: Oh, and Matt & Kim - Sidewalks, I'm from Barcelona - 27 Songs from Barcelona.

Guest Mr. Potato Head

In no particular order:

The Wave Pictures - Susan Rode The Cyclone

No Age - Everything In Between

The New Pornographers - Together

Hot Hot Heat - Future Breeds

Hawksley Workman - Meat

The Gaslight Anthem - American Slang

Frog Eyes - Paul's Tomb: A Triumph

Fight Like Apes - The Body of Christ and the Legs of Tina Turner

Caribou - Swim

Best Coast - Crazy for You

Beach House - Teen Dream

The Arcade Fire - The Suburbs

And I don't have any of this in iTunes, but new Broken Social Scene, Kathryn Calder, and especially The Russian Futurists, which I really need to find somewhere. Also Wolf Parade, Wintersleep, and even the Glee stuff is fine in small doses.

Top five albums over all would be New Pornos, Fight Like Apes, Gaslight Anthem, Russian Futurists and Caribou. Maybe even in that order.

Also in no particular order -

The Hold Steady - Heaven Is Whenever

A Loss For Words - Motown Classics

Oh No, Theodore! - Self Titled EP

Steven Page - Page One

That's about it as far as my feeble brain goes. I need to give a few things some better listens, Elvis Costello's new album mainly - and that will likely make it knowing Costello.

Nice list Trisof. I wasn't such a huge fan of Salem, but it's still growing on me. I just think I need to get really blazed and listen to the thing.

If I wasn't such a sucker for She & Him, and if Kanye's album blew chunks, Salem's would be my #1. It's that good, to me. It's introduced me to alot of new music this year (Dead Virgin, Vagina Wolf, Young Cream, blacktriangle, Modern Witch...) I love me some witch-house.

the Gayngs album is really growing on me, though. Bon Iver is everywhere this year.

In no real order:

"I Speak Beacuse I Can" - Larua Marling

"Darwin Deez" - Darwin Deez

"Recovery" - Eminem

"Plastic Beach" - Gorillaz

"Contra" - Vampire Weekend

"Hot Mess" - Cobra Starship

"The Winter of Mixed Drinks" - Frightened Rabbit

I'll add some more when I can think of them. A lot of albums I've listened to this year have also been from a few years before.

I listened to it again last night after posting and enjoyed it more at 2AM while on a red bull binge. The first time I listened to the record was at 2 in the afternoon on a sunny day and it didn't feel right.

I am going to "legally acquire" the Gayngs album later on this afternoon when I go to Starbucks for my coffee. I've heard good things.

If you liked Salem, you might like Young Cream first (has a member of Salem), and the other witch-house bands I listed. There's a pretty badass witch-house compilation CD for free at this website called Disco Naivete, too.
