  1. I was more making a reference to the joke that ended in people actually having to implement that no children rule. I think that was more folks playing the long game.
  2. A Haunted House Here's a gag. It doesn't work. Here's a gag. It is a gag. Here's a gag. There's Andrew Daly! (He's not playing the wonderfully demented people he plays on Comedy Bang Bang.) Here's a gag. Everyone's a sociopath. Here's a gag. Black people do this and white people do this and people do this. Here a--oh god this is 86 minutes what is my life and why am I doing this to myself--fade to black. Warm Bodies Enjoyed the premise, but it tends to lose a lot of steam in its last 45 minutes. At least the premise was cute and the movie was eminently watchable. So I'm fine with it in that regard. Decent little soundtrack for the most part, too.
  3. I think we're going to have an interesting chat about that very soon, as I'm finding myself disagreeing. But on the subject, no genre really outright dies these days. We just have the ebbs and flows of various genres. Hell, it might be way better to just put the rom-com on backlogue like the Western. Maybe save it for Joel and Ethan Coen (if you consider Raising Arizona an odd rom-com). EDIT: Just remembered Intolerable Cruelty and I'm probably wrong.
  4. Movie 43 Well, that was boring.
  5. The XP thing seems a bit nicer, more of a clean RPG process. But that's assuming from one picture.
  6. Blip just installed a system where they have a freeze frame message for 90 seconds on AdBlock. Problem is, I'd rather have a giant 90 second ad than spreading the ad breaks around one or two spots. But I like the people and I feel awful that I probs took some revenue, so whatever, turned off the AdBlock.
  7. Yeah, unless there's some nice integration in Dynasty mode, I can't see myself getting too excited for it. I do wonder if they're going to address the College Football Playoff stuff in this game or wait until next year. I also wonder if they can further play around with conference realignment, since that's pretty much been what's drawn me in for the past couple of games even when nothing else was all that different.

    Underrated albums

Vivian Girls' Share the Joy did not get nearly enough love and was a nice progression of that sort of limiting girl garage punk sound. I liked the longer songs. I don't know if fans view it this way, but I remember really loving Dirty Projectors' Swing Lo Magellan. Kind of funny that the album came out after a song from their last album gained them their most mainstream prominence to date.

    RIP Roger Ebert

I think just the fact that he willfully published books worth of exposing readers to the art of film (and a book like Your Movie Sucks because his putdowns were so entertaining and worth putting in print) shows what he was willing to do to get middle America to understand great cinema and all that comes with it. Just being the premiere critic in the arts means he's influenced how we view not only film but writing. I'm sure in that archive of the What Did You See Today posts, there's a shitload of writing attempting to be like Roger Ebert. Which is not an insult by any means but just proof of the giant shadow (and the myriad of terms single-handedly made by Ebert) that will always loom from his work. I don't know if I ever directly wanted to be like him, but it's impossible for me to say that a lot of my writing isn't attempting to be like him. Because he was damn great at well-thought and understandable analysis. God, this sucks. RIP.
  10. Lupa's new Witchcraft V episode is really quite enjoyable. With Mike J on it, it's a fun time, plus Lupa seems to have wanted to make herself happier with some minor hair and aesthetic changes, perhaps. It's nice regardless of these things, though.
  11. Stoker Kind of funny that I thought a spring break movie would be more disturbing than a Park Chan-Wook movie. But damn is this good. Mia Wasikowsai is one of those actresses that is fascinating in her actions even when her defined character is "be really silent." And I like that the movie doesn't seek a redemptive life for its leads. It's really just a slow examination into a complicated depravity that is pretty skin-crawling. In an entertaining way, of course, but it is still skin-crawling.
  12. Because now you're older and you have more insurance.
  13. I think he's finally harboring that insane potential. With a guy like him, it's either great or totally awful. But a movie like this has some spot-on casting and unlike something like Ken Park (which he only wrote, to be fair) is always visually interesting. So yeah. Also just realized I watched Skyfall finally. I mean, I don't think there's anything more that I could bring other than I really liked it. Found it interesting I was way more enthralled with the flirtation between Craig and Naomie Harris than by the typical Bond girl that shows up. Also, is Javier Bardem's acting challenge that he can look patently ridiculous yet still be a real unhinged terror on screen? Because he's passing that challenge.
  14. Spring Breakers I would normally try to numerically quantify a movie, but I don't know if I can here. Someone asked me if it was "good" and I didn't have enough space or time to say "there's insane things happening once every 10 minutes in a movie that also is weirdly dull in some places and the most hilarious thing I've seen in a cinema in others." Especially because I would have to describe the insane things. Ah fuck it, I have spoiler tags. I'll go in order: In short, pretty sure me and Tristy would be the only people who would love the hell out of this movie.
  15. Movie needs more wooden Teddy Dunn acting to be a real VM movie.
  16. God, that show intro would be for a show I would have devoutly loved then. Miss the Sam Raimi show model.
  17. http://blip.tv/the-cinema-snob/i-spit-on-your-grave-part-1-by-the-cinema-snob-6549273 The 200th Cinema Snob is I Spit On Your Grave. It goes crazy.
  18. I missed a lot of movies, but my top 5 would have probably been at least close to what it is if I'd seen more stuff: 1. Haywire 2. The Perks of Being a Wallflower 3. Moonrise Kingdom 4. Indie Game: The Movie 5. Dredd
  19. It's a Disaster -- B+ God, this ruled. If you're a fan of movies like In The Loop that become blazing fast collections of jokes interspersed with pitch black satire, this is it for you. I don't know any other way to describe it without really spoiling much of the movie. Even the posters (and admittedly the title) kind of spoil the action mid-way, although I don't think knowing the plot will affect your enjoyment. It might be worth a re-watch if I view it higher than this, to be honest.
  20. I don't know if I'm a genius or just really dense for just now connecting the similarities of Paige to Miranda from Mass Effect.

  21. Up to episode seven of season 1 of Homeland. It is dangerously veering towards Walking Dead territory where I sort of watch for where the plot goes but I don't give two shits about anyone involved. Then again, people seem to like season 2, so I guess keep watching?
  22. http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2013/1/17/3885652/manti-teo-girlfriend-hoax-twitter And now it gets weirder. Several tweets claim as far as December 4th that this was a hoax akin to Catfish and seem to lend the idea that perhaps Manti was duped. Basically a lot of what Fait Accompli's link shows.
  23. Has anyone on here broached the theory that Manti created this terrifying lie because he didn't want to be outed as gay? I'm finding that theory to be doubtful, but are we still that closeted as a sports culture for people to have to go to absurd lengths to do this to avoid the consequences? Unfortunately, that's probably the case especially considering a school like Notre Dame is pretty gross in terms of sweeping sexuality (and thus sex crimes like the Lizzy Seeberg allegations of sexual assault) under the rug.
  24. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!
  25. Yeah, I'm pretty sure she's still a major character in the 80s Dan stuff as well. What a strange romantic life Mr. Jones leads.
