Spiderman 4

As I was looking through Wikipedia, I wound up on a link for Spiderman 4. Here is the description given about it on Wiki:

"Sam Raimi will return as director, and returning cast members include Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, J. K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson, Michael Papajohn as Dennis Carradine (despite the latter character's supposed death), Rosemary Harris as May Parker, and Bill Nunn as Joseph "Robbie" Robertson.[32][33][34] Bruce Campbell will also return, in a larger role than his cameos in the first three films[35] (many fans suspect that even though the main villain may be the Lizard, Campbell may actually play the part of Mysterio, and Dylan Baker will reprise his role as Doctor Curt Connors and may play the Lizard[36]. The film is being produced by Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, Todd Black and Grant Curtis; executive producers are Stan Lee, Todd Hallowell and Josh Donen.[37] Both a fourth and a fifth movie are planned, and at one time the idea of shooting the two sequels concurrently was under consideration. However, Raimi stated in March 2009 that only the fourth film was currently in development and that if there was a fifth and sixth film, the two films would actually be a continuation of each other[38][39][40][41] James Vanderbilt was hired in October 2007 to pen the screenplay, after initial reports in early 2007 that Sony Pictures was in contact with David Koepp, who wrote the first Spider-Man film. [42][43] The script was subsequently rewritten by Pulitzer-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire, and rewritten again by Gary Ross in October 2009.[44] Sony has also engaged Vanderbilt to write scripts for Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6.[43]

In 2007, Raimi expressed interest in portraying the transformation of Dr. Curt Connors into his villainous alter-ego, the Lizard; the character's actor Dylan Baker and producer Grant Curtis have also been enthusiastic about the idea.[45][46][47]

Raimi has also said that he hopes to film second unit photography in his home state of Michigan, having considered the location for Spider-Man 3 before opting for the cheaper Cleveland, Ohio.[48]

It was reported on December 8, 2009 that John Malkovich is in negotiations to play Vulture, while Anne Hathaway will play Felicia Hardy. Though Hardy will not transform into the Black Cat, as in the comics. Instead, Raimi’s Felicia will become a brand-new superpowered figure called the Vulturess.[49]

As of January 5th, 2010, Spider-Man 4 has lost its May 5th, 2011 release date because the studio has decided to halt the movie indefinitely. Currently they are writing for a re-write of the script from Alvin Sargent. Anne Hathaway has also been dropped from the film.[50]"

So, with that information available, I thought I would post a topic about it and see what peoples thoughts are on the matter.

Im really not looking forward to a 4th Spiderman movie. Or a 5th or 6th. I didnt really think 3 was THAT bad, but I still would rather they not do more Spiderman movies and just let it die off for now, and let someone else do a reboot of the series in a decade or something.

cancelled.

http://www.newsarama.com/film/Spider-Man-4-Cancelled-100111.html

The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog confirmed late today that Spider-Man 4, a movie that had recently hit the brakes due to creative differences primarily over what villain the movie should use, has been outright canceled.

Columbia, Sony, and Marvel Studios will instead reboot the Spider-Man movie franchise, launching a new series of films with Peter Parker in high school, more similar to the take on the character seen in Marvel Comics' Ultimate Comics Spider-Man. With the relaunch, director Sam Raimi and stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, who had been involved with the first three big screen successes, all part ways with the franchise.

Raimi presented far from sour grapes, instead wishing Marvel luck saying, "the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job."

Not exactly thrilled.

Okay, the third film sucked balls, but the first was one of the best origin stories ever for superhero films, and the second was a great sequel in it's own right. Whats the point in rebooting when they could just get a new lead and carry on from there? I mean, it's not as if there are only so many stories a Spiderman film can tell.

Culver City, CA (January 11, 2010) -- Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012.

Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.

The new chapter in the Spider-Man franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.

“A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three Spider-Man films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We’re very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning,” said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

“Working on the Spider-Man movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job,” said Sam Raimi.

“We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade. This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine Spider-Man in anyone else’s hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable,” said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio’s chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise. “Now everything begins anew, and that’s got us all tremendously excited about what comes next. Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can’t wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012.”

"Spider-Man will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures. "We have always believed that story comes first and story guides the direction of these films and as we move onto the next chapter, we will stay true to that principle and will do so with the highest respect for the source material and the fans and moviegoers who deserve nothing but the best when it comes to bringing these stories and characters to life on the big screen."

About the high school thing, isn't that one of Spidey's golden era's?

I seem to remember back when I was reading the comics readers always seemed to want to go back in time to this golden era or that golden era in Spidey's history(or at least try in some way to recapture said golden era).

Granted it sometimes failed big time, like when they 'killed' Mary Jane off(in an attempt to bring Spidey back to his hard luck bachelor days), so sometimes stuff is best left in the past.

JJ Abrahms to direct?

Greg Grunberg as Mysterio! :shifty:

I'd love for Joss Whedon to direct, I've always wanted Eliza Dushku as Black Cat and it'd bring me closer to the dream

I honestly cannot see Joss Whedon being able to direct a movie that well. He's alright with episodic stuff (though that will be debated by others), but that doesn't always translate to movies. He's proven that with Dr. Horrible, he's proved it with his run on the X-Men comics. I just really think his style works better for episodic/serialized stuff. Plus, I don't see a studio taking a chance on a 'first time' director for a movie as big as Spider-Man.

I wish I could give proper reasons, but I can't other than just 'Eh, I don't feel like Joss Whedon would fit'.

Yeah, I thought Serenity was a quality movie. I'm not sure Whedon would be right Spiderman, but I would definitely not count him out as a movie director. I have mixed feelings about the reboot as I was looking forward to Spidey exploring more villians and such - growing up. But I could never see Toby McGuire playing Peter as he got tougher. Also, more Madamme Webb. (Y)

This week has been proof that entertainment executives are fucking tards. Yes, Spider-Man 3 sucked large amounts of balls, but nothing that couldn't have been fixed in the next movie. It's absurd to reboot a franchise that's less than ten years old (unless the first movie sucked, like The Hulk), but I guess since comic books can get away with it all the time, so can comic book movies.
