The Shows Mostly Formerly Affiliated with NBC's Thursday Night Comedy Block Thread **SPOILERS**

I don't think that's true, it's just that you can't rely on Nielson ratings to judge the audience that it does have. It's the same thing with Chuck, an audience was there but it took the Subway campaign for NBC to truly realize that because judging solely on Nielson ratings was and is, misleading.

That said, until something drastically changes with the TV industry, that's what show will continue to be judged on so it's mostly a moot point.

EDIT: started replying to c-heat before the othe posts.

Exactly. People need to see that NBC moving to Community is a very wise move. It has a small, very dedicated fan-base, which is exactly the type of program that is put on and succeeds on Friday nights. The ratings expectations are significantly lower on Friday and there is significantly less competition on television, but significantly less viewership. If Community moves to Friday and actually improves in ratings (which is my prediction), than it might actually get renewed for a 5th season.

If it helps Supernatural has pretty much nothing but a dedicated fanbase and it's been on Friday nights and renewed for like the past three seasons. Might have more to do with The CW having absolutely nothing else that brings in ratings, though. >_>

Fringe has also benefited from being on Friday. I think I'm more "auuuuugh" about being in close proximity to Whitney than anything else.

excluding ABC's somewhat successful TGIF lineup in the past

Somewhat? TGIF was pretty huge in its day. TV has changed dramatically since, but it was a big deal at the time.

It's a bummer, but they could've easily axed the show altogether. NBC knows the audience isn't watching live at 8pm on Thursdays, Community's audience just doesn't watch TV like that. They're watching on Hulu, DVR, torrent or buying the DVD, so the move makes sense. Also, Grimm has done well on Friday nights, it's one of the few things NBC can call a success these days and maybe the small, dedicated fanbase of that night can help it out. And you know 90% of NBC's fall lineup is going to bomb, so it could move, it could get more episodes, or it could quietly finish its run with 13 fantastic episodes. Either way, it's getting a season 4 and that's all that matters to me at this point.

Maybe in five years it'll get revived on Netflix, maybe TBS will save it like they did with Cougar Town or maybe Joss Whedon will use his Avengers money and give us the "...and a movie part" if we ask him nicely. If anything, the drastically shifting television landscape has shown us that a lot of these stories and characters can live on beyond the normal 8-10pm network television spot.

So, in addition to a move to friday, there's a lot of talk going around the Dan Harmon could be stepping down as showrunner. The NBC president said "Those conversations are happening as we speak" when asked.

Darkest timeline, guys. Darkest timeline. :(

I came in to point out Fringe and Supernatural as shows that seemed destined for cancellation and yet have thrived with their smaller numbers on Fridays but it's been said. Yet before everyone gets all doom and gloom it should be repeated. The show was renewed at least. The rest of NBC's scheduling is actually pretty smart. Like giving up on Thursdays at 10.

Guest mr. potato head

Finally caught up on everything from last week.

Community rebounded quite nicely. John Hodgman was excellent, the mental institution scene and some of the other clip show stuff were superb, and I'm feeling much better heading into the finale. Don't remember much more as it's been four days since I watched it :shifty:

As for 30 Rock, the Jack/Avery reunion and subsequent mind-games felt maybe a little watered down, but nothing terrible. Liked Liz and Liz's Boyfriend Whose Name I Forget (Chris?) talking about the ambiguous nursery (perhaps for kids, perhaps for plants). Forget what Tracy and Jenna and Kenneth were up to, if anything.

Good lord, The Office. I think they were going for a hard reset as best they could (most heavy-handedly with the guy taking the Sabre sign down and leaving the Dunder Mifflin one up), but it just didn't work at all. Nobody behaved like a rational person would, and that's inexcusable for anybody other than Robert (and that's only because it's been established that he's not a rational person). Seriously, watch 'Casino Night' and this episode back to back and tell me you aren't stoked to see what happens in Season 3 and dreading what's coming in Season 9. The idea of apologizing for this season and getting back to the Office we all know and love would be fine, except they didn't handle the apology well, and nothing from the front half of this season has suggested that they're capable of doing The Office we all know and love anymore. Which is fine, given that there's only a finite amount of workable ideas for any premise, but in that case, there should be a much better "something new" than what they went with.

And Parks and Rec was, of course, really good. Nice to see Andy get put on a different track, nice to see another tender Ron/Leslie moment (when even Ben didn't know where she was, but Ron figured it out!), nice to see Donna be awesome and Jerry be Jerry. Not nuts about Tom and Ann but whatever.

Yeah, there's absolutely no hook for The Office season nine, probably the first time since the first season that it's felt like the season finale offered nothing exciting for the next season and that's because the first season wasn't a hit at all and they didn't know if they were coming back when they made it.

I mean, what am I supposed to be excited about? Dwight and Angela getting back together, again, when they already had the perfect ending to that relationship as the resolution to the Dwight/Angela/Andy triangle years ago? Darryl getting together with Val, who has absolutely no personality whatsoever and simply exists to be wooed? Andy being manager again, or David Wallace coming back, or something? Whatever they decide Nellie Bertram's characterization is next season? Shit, I would take that reboot/mostly new cast idea over a season nine that feels like an extension of this season eight.

Speaking of The Office, if you go to NBC.com there's a short 4-part story they cut from the episode (I assume for time and the need to hurriedly wrap up every little sub-plot) that's actually better than most of the episode.

Andy as office manager is the worst part of the show. It feels like a really bad version of Michael Scott but unlike the times in the show where we see that Michael Scott is actually a pretty great boss, we never get that from Andy. He just sucks as a boss. And the character is horrible. There is a bit of depth there, with the family pressure, but other than that he just seem so dull. Me not being the biggest Ed Helms fan probably contributes.

All of the Community episodes were fantastic. The weakest episode would probably be the Chang "takeover" episode.

I particularly liked the [Finale Spoilers of Community]

Final episode with the Shirley / Pierce case as it really felt like they were tying everything up, while leaving just enough to add some intrique in the case they would be renewed, which they probably didn't know at the time of filming, but making the futures of the characters a bit definite and concrete in case it were the enevitable series finale.

The 8-Bit episode was pretty enjoyable as well. I really enjoyed the fact that Troy constantly hops around like a child and Annie still goes to the extremes when she freaks out.
