I know its the end of the season and lots of footballers are retiring, but one who perhaps deserves a special mention is Iker Casillas. He hasn't played for over a year, but he's announced his official retirement.

Pretty incredible career. Fifteen seasons as Real Madrid number one and 167 caps for Spain. I can't think of any other goalkeeper in the 21st century who matches him when it comes to winning stuff.

There's not much between them but I think Buffon might edge it out. Buffon is 11-14 on league titles depending on how you consider the two Serie A wins Juventus were stripped of, plus their Serie B win in case anyone wants to count that. Casillas seems to have done better on individual awards though, so I'm not sure which one I'd pick overall.

  Casillas Buffon
League Titles 7 11-14
National Cups 3 5
Super Cups 8 7
European Cups 3 1
League appearances 387 333
Caps 167 176
World Cups 1 1
Euros 2 0

I think Buffon was a better player which is why I was careful to specify Casillas was the best in the 21st century at winning stuff. And I think that holds true: Casillas won more Big Cups (which I define as continental trophies and international stuff), while the sole European trophy Buffon has won was in the 20th century

But Buffon did well too. He shouldn’t feel bad..

It might not have made the news in the UK but FIFA are likely going to change their eligibility laws again

https://www.foxsports.com/articles/soccer/fifa-shapes-new-rule-to-help-players-switch-national-team

Basically they're tweaking the laws to allow young players who were capped at senior level young at most 3 times switch to another country if they're never capped again. So if a player plays 3 times or less before they their 21st birthday they can make a switch after 3 years since their last interantional appearance.

Change seems to favour the Chinese and their small group of Brazlilians who they want to cap and Munir who took his case to CAS.

Would have both positive and negative connotations for us. It'll be tougher for us to cap tie young players but it allows allows players who chose England at a young age to change their mind. The change for example suddenly makes Michael Obafemi eligible for Nigeria and England again until he makes 3 more senior appearances or a single appearance once he turns 21.

It also cleans up the granny rule in our favour around the murky water around at what point these players obtain Irish nationallity

Whole amendement is here and it's due to be voted on next month

Not sure how I feel about it but I'd be probably on the side of liking it as it doesn't trap players capped by a massive nation to tie them. Only for them to be forgotten when they don't live up to their potential, like Munir.

Speaking of, he appears unhappy to be left out of the Ireland squad.

Rightfully so too. Adam Idah and Troy Parrott picked ahead of him.

Idah I get because he offers something different and he's highly rated by Kenny. No way Parrott should be in ahead of him though. He hasn't played since before the pandemic and has had more nights out with drug dealers than Premier League appearances.

The former Manchester City player Yaya Touré has been dropped from playing in Unicef’s annual charity football match after reportedly posting a pornographic video in a WhatsApp group with other players and offering to hire sex workers for them.

Touré will no longer take part in the event after complaints were made about messages he sent to a group with fellow players in the children’s charity event. He reportedly posted a video showing a naked woman in a bath and offered to hire 19 sex workers for his teammates.

Sources told the Sun, which first reported the news, that a string of complaints were made about Touré to Soccer Aid, Unicef’s annual charity football game between former stars, and he faced criticism at a hotel on Friday morning during a breakfast with other players before the game on Sunday.

“Inappropriate content was shared in a private group text,” a spokesman for Soccer Aid said. “The message was quickly deleted and a full apology was made to all. Soccer Aid for Unicef has discussed the above with the individual involved and he has decided to no longer continue to participate in this year’s event.

“While it was an error of judgment, it was felt that the behaviour didn’t align with the values of the event and its cause, and it was the right thing for him to step back from this year’s match.”

Touré tweeted on Saturday: “I would like to apologise to everyone involved in Soccer Aid for an inappropriate joke I deeply regret. It was meant as a joke, however, I lacked thorough consideration for the feelings of all the other participants.

“That being said I deleted the jokes within minutes and I immediately apologised to all inside the group.”

In what appeared to be a slight towards the media for reporting his remarks, the former Ivory Coast international said he regretted that his “inappropriate joke” had detracted attention from the charity game in aid of children.

“Regardless of the circumstances, I want to take full responsibility. I am a grown man who should not be engaged in such jokes,” he said.
