You'll be put into a game with 16 other people. Sometimes they suck and kill you randomly, other times, they work together.

Just go into private games with EWB members so that you can ban them if they kill you over and over.

you can enter passive mode where you can't be killed or kill anyone

To answer Ollie's question, it's a mixture of both. There's the standard cops 'n' crooks, deathmatches, etc. but you can also hop online, phone a friend to invite them into your game, and undertake missions if you so desire, according to some of the demos shown.
