The Sir Alex Ferguson Thread (For Manager related news)

As expected

His style matches Leeds, but that style is a big part of why they are in relegation danger. Marsch believes in his principles, but if they don't work, he had no Plan B either really. Leipzig players hated him and wanted him gone. He failed there massively.

I want to see him do well, but I think this is a massive gamble

Manchester United have held talks with Erik ten Hag as they continue their search for a manager. The Ajax head coach is one of several candidates on the shortlist to take over from Ralf Rangnick in the summer.

Ten Hag asked about United’s budget and plans for the future during an interview this week. The 52-year-old has improved his English since an interview with Tottenham last spring – to a level that would not be a barrier from United’s perspective – and feels ready to take on a Premier League challenge after more than four years at Ajax.

He has previously been in charge of Utrecht, Bayern Munich II and Go Ahead Eagles in a managerial career that started 10 years ago. Ajax are two points clear of PSV at the top of the Eredivisie as Ten Hag pursues a second league title in a row and a third in four seasons. His team were knocked out of the Champions League in the last 16 by Benfica last week.

United will speak to other candidates, including Paris Saint-Germain’s Mauricio Pochettino. The former Tottenham manager is under pressure after four defeats in his past six matches, Ligue 1 losses to Nantes, Nice and Monaco coming either side of a Champions League exit against Real Madrid.

Rangnick is in interim charge until the end of the season. The club have gone out of the FA Cup and Champions League on his watch, leaving the focus is on trying to finish in the top four. United are four points behind fourth-placed Arsenal having played one game more.

Louis van Gaal has told Erik ten Hag he should consider turning down the manager’s job at Old Trafford because Manchester United are a “commercial club” and he would be “better going to a football club”.

Manchester United have held talks with Ten Hag as they continue their search for a manager. The Ajax head coach is one of several candidates on the shortlist to take over from the interim manager Ralf Rangnick in the summer.

But the Netherlands manager, who was sacked by Manchester United after winning the FA Cup in May 2016, is not sure a move to Old Trafford would be a wise one for Ten Hag.

“Erik ten Hag is a great coach and that is always good for Manchester United,” Van Gaal said at a press conference to preview Tuesday’s friendly between Netherlands and Germany. “But Manchester United are a commercial club, so it’s a difficult choice for a coach. He would be better going to a football club. I’m not going to advise him, he’ll call me himself. But he must choose a football club and not a commercial club.”

Ten Hag has been in the top job at Ajax for five seasons, winning the Eredivisie twice and taking the club to the semi-finals of the 2019 Champions League. Ajax are leading the Eredivisie by two points but were knocked out of the Champions League by Benfica this month despite dominating possession in both legs of the last-16 tie.

Current Paris St-Germain manager, Mauricio Pochettino, Spain head coach Luis Enrique and Sevilla’s Julen Lopetegui have also been linked with the vacant post. Whoever succeeds Rangnick may have to oversee a season with no Champions League football. United are four points behind fourth-placed Arsenal having played one game more.

Steve McClaren is under consideration for a return to Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag’s No 2 should the Dutchman be appointed as Manchester United’s next permanent manager.

Ten Hag held talks with United last month. As the Ajax manager has never worked in the Premier League, the ideal candidate to be his assistant would have experience in the competition. McClaren worked in the role between 1999 and 2001 under Sir Alex Ferguson, with the club claiming the treble at the end of his first season there.

Should the appointments happen, it would mark a role reversal for the pair. The vastly experienced McClaren had Ten Hag as his assistant for the 2008-9 season when in charge of Twente. The 60-year-old took the Dutch club to second before claiming Twente’s inaugural league championship the following year.

McClaren, who managed England for 18 games in 16 months from 2006-2007, won the League Cup with Middlesbrough in 2004, and has been in charge of Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest, Derby County twice and Newcastle United. His last managerial position at Queens Park Rangers came to an end three years ago, when he was sacked with the club 17th in the Championship.

Although United are still considering other candidates including Paris Saint-Germain’s Mauricio Pochettino, it is understood that 52-year-old Ten Hag has particularly impressed the club regarding taking over from Ralf Rangnick, the interim manager, in the close season.

The first match for whoever is appointed will be the friendly against Liverpool in Bangkok on 12 July. While the ticket prices range from around £115 to £455 and the latter cost is more than for this season’s Champions League final both clubs receive only a fixed fee to participate. The match is thought to be close to a sellout.

Sean Dyche was just sacked too. Suspicious

I'm still pretty shocked at this news. I guess we'll have to wait and see if Burnley fall like a brick now.

Is Rangnick heading somewhere?
