General Movie Thread

So I'm watching No Holds Barred. I could swear I'd seen the villain Kurt Fuller in something before so I'm checking out his imdb. It says he was in Porn n' Chicken. Does anybody remember that movie? I thought it was the weirdest shit when it came out and it was... I dunno. A teen movie? They were college kids but as far as a genre it's a teen movie. I don't remember liking it but I guess I didn't hate it. I don't even remember how the chicken came into the premise.

Every time I see the end of The Breakfast Club, my mind automatically drifts to Psych. Use of same song for end of film as for Psych commercial. It's weird as hell. I only mention this because I've gotten in to a weird John Hughes kick lately, and it's annoying me how many times my mind is referencing the allusions to the films in a sort of, "Oh, NOW I get it!" montage.

Alex Karras, former NFL player and Mongo in Blazing Saddles, suffered kidney failure in the last few weeks and doctors give him only a few days to live.

Karras, 77, was released from the Santa Monica hospital and is now on hospice care in his home in California. He recently joined a lawsuit against the NFL, claiming he suffers dementia as a result of playing with the Detroit Lions. He was also diagnosed with cancer.

Karras was part of the Lions' defense in the 60s. He then became a comedy actor, with his most memorable role in Saddles. He also appeared on several television shows and became a star with the 1980s sitcom Webster.

The Lions released the following statement: "We join his legions of fans from both sports and entertainment in prayer and support for Alex, his wife Susan, and his entire family during this most difficult time."

So yeah, I am going to see Lawless tonight. However, I am really of two minds on it; I really can't stand Shia LeBeef at all. However, it has both Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman and is written by Nick Cave. Have any EWB'ers seen it?

It looks entertaining, reviews haven't been too favorable though.

Lawless was okay. For me it was like Warrior in that most of the performances were fantastic (Guy Pearce especially) and everything else about the film was just so-so. Gary Oldman is barely in it too, which I wasn't happy about.

I watch Ruby Sparks today, which I am expecting to fully enjoy.

Has anyone seen Friends with Kids? It got slated by the critics but after watching it the other day I fully recommend people try to watch it. It is really good.

Ruby Sparks is great too. Paul Dano does surprisingly well as a lead actor. It, like Friends with Kids, is more serious than trailers let on. One of the final scenes is actually quite haunting.

I quite liked Warrior so im glad to hear this. Lawless looks quite fun and I need some more Guy Pearce on my TV.

Lawless, for me, was Guy Pearce and Tom Hardy. As mentioned in the other thread, it really hang on those two fantastic performances. Pearce was a magnificent villain in it; I didn't care much for everyone else but yeah, the movie is worth it just for seeing Hardy and Pearce.

Not going to make a new thread for this, but I'm trying to decide what my Halloween Movie Marathon will be this year. Normally I'll pick a selection of my favourites along with something I've never seen, and usually make sure something ridiculous makes it into the list too. This year I want to make an effort to watch films I've never seen. Would like about 4, maybe a couple more on top if I want to make it an all-night thing. Would like something overthetop and cheesy to break things up, but otherwise I'd just take good horror films in the broad sense.

I have a few films picked out already:

1. Trick 'r' Treat - I think I'm pretty set on this one. I've been told it is good.

2. Rogue - Seems like it might be a good 'monster' film.

3. Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale - People tell me this is funny as well as being a decent horror.

4. Let Me In - I've never seen this remake, but I hear it is good and I loved Let the Right One In so it is probably worth a shot.

5. The Loved Ones - Not sure really. When a friend described it to me it sounds bad, but it has great reviews. Is it just torture porn?

6. The Midnight Meat Train - I figure this will be a gore-fest that I can just turn my brain off for. Plus, Vinnie Jones as a serial killer, gotta be a little fun doesn't it?

Anyone vouch for these films or recommend that I avoid them? I am also welcoming suggestions. I not really a horror movie buff so there is probably a few that have slipped under my radar, but I have seen all the "classics" as far as I am aware. All the above films are from the last decade or so as well, anything that has had a huge cult following or critical acclaim from before that I've mostly likely sought out by now. Unless someone has a really good film from the 60s like has slipped under everyone's radar that they can suggest.

As with every year I will also have An American Werewolf in London on standby just in case none of these work out.

As of seeing Wreck-It Ralph today (it was very charming and fun) I've now seen enough really good movies that The Dark Knight Rises is only the tenth best movie I've seen this year, and that's without having seen Argo, Killing Them Softly, or Django Unchained yet. That is nuts. Anyone else feel it's been a really strong year for film overall?

Yeah it definitely has been and I don't even know how I'm going to rank any of them because there's a ton that fall within the "great" category for different reasons and I'm not sure I'll be able to properly sort it.

That is until I see Killing Them Softly, at least.

Having watched it again now, it sucks that Dark Knight Rises won't be as high as I'd hoped it would. As much as there's elements of the film that I adored, there's so much that's just not quite as good as it should have been that it's held back from being truly great.

Also the ending of Bane is so fucking lame.

There's so much stuff I haven't yet seen that I want to though. Looper, Dredd, Seven Psychopaths, Hitchcock, The Hobbit, Django Unchained, Argo, Lawless... probably more I'm forgetting.
