Hire a well respected GM who has built championship teams, hire the coach who just won the Stanley Cup, luck out in the draft and get two top 10 players outside of the top 10?

Why would that mean anything to Tavares though? To him they're just totally new people when he liked the old people. They knew they were going up against his hometown team in free agency, they had time to really make sure their ducks were in a row. Instead they showed him they were still working on getting them in a row.

Islanders are probably fine without him taking up all that cap space, they'll miss him but it's not devastating for them in the long-term.

Erik Karlsson is headed to Tampa Bay in exchange for Sergachev a 1st. Not sure what the other moving parts/contracts involved are, but those are the main pieces.

The 2017 Eastern Conference finalists are going to look almost completely different a little over a year after that run. And with any luck for the fans in Ottawa, Melnyk will eventually sell the team and release them from this curse.

Supposedly Karlsson to Tampa is not a done deal.

What is a done deal: Alex Burrows. :(

While the Senators try to play hardball with the Master, Stevie Y locks up Nikita Kucherov to an 8 year deal. That would effectively take Tampa out of the EK sweepstakes.

The Sens and Bolts supposedly had agreed to a deal that would of netted them Sergachev, Point, Raddysh, and a pick. But, Dorion and/or Melnyk got greedy and insisted Bobby Ryan and his contract be included which is when the delays started happening. Now, EK might walk for nothing in the summer.

Nobody is better at being a GM than Yzerman and the Senators basically just shot themselves in the foot. Since it's the NHL they might wind up hovering around the playoff cut-off line at the trade deadline and keep Karlsson just in case, and then they absolutely get nothing for him as he goes off to sign somewhere else.

Also Vegas gave Fleury a stupidly big contract, but it's smart since even if he does drop off from his performance last season he's the face of the franchise and they need to keep him around when the team returns to the mean over the next season or two.
