This has reminded me of something, I've always found the term 'the troubles' to be...I guess condescending might be the most accurate way of putting it? Like, this is a deeply bloody conflict spanning decades that has led to the death or injury of thousands upon thousands of people so it feels like it's trivialising it a bit to call it 'the troubles'. That almost feels like how you'd sum up a bad Christmas where you had an argument with your sibling over a drunken game of Monopoly.

Is that a weird thing to think?

No, i dont think so.

Obviously, Im not from Northern Ireland. The conflict did not really impact my life at all. But I would be inclined to agree.

I've seen it a few times, mostly used as a "joke" about how 'prim and proper' English culture is.

"How do we refer to this period of our time that resulted in thousands of deaths and atrocities?"

"Ehh...lets just call it 'The Troubles', no one will question that!"

But yea, without watching the video by @Hobo yet, calling it "The Troubles" really seems to trivialize that

I'd never actually looked into where the name came from come to think of it.  There wasn't really any scope to explore that in the video.

As per wiki: the term was used to describe the Irish revolutionary period as well and dates back to the English Civil War.

Quote

The "troubles" was used to describe the 17th-century Wars of the Three Kingdoms by all three national parliaments. For example, after the Restoration in 1660 the English Act of free and general pardon, indemnity and oblivion starts with "The King's most excellent Majesty, taking into his gracious and serious consideration the long and great troubles..."; as does the similar act in Scotland: "The king's most excellent majesty, considering that by the late troubles diverse of his subjects..." (Scottish Parliament 1662); and by the Irish Parliament in the Act of Explanation (1665) "our royal father of blessed memory had been forced, during the late troubles, to make with the Irish subjects of that our kingdom" (Irish Parliament 1665, § 2)

I think that "prim and proper" description @Lint used does fit to an extent. There was also similarly euphamistic expression "The Irish Question".  The question being "how do you deal with these Irish people who at the very least want political autonomy, if not, outright independence from Britain?"

These are both amazing.

Incredibly long (Jenny Nicholson's vid is nearly 4hrs long). But also amazing. Hbomb's video just keeps taking turn after unexpected turn.

Most of HBombs video was known to me already given TT's involvement and the coverage he's received over the last several years with his involvement in the Amico project. Still, that money structuring thing I wasn't aware of and it was fun to see an outsider reacting to the madness as the thing just kept getting deeper.

There's a similar video from Defunctland that came out last week as well about how a song from the Disney channel (I think) has been similarly incorrectly credited. I'm sure I've heard about another video as well along the same lines because it was weird how all these similar videos came out at once.

Also, James Rolfe's autobiography came out last week kinda out of the blue. I've not read it yet but it seems oddly formatted, like I know there's gonna be the odd blank page in a book as you kinda have to have a set number of pages but there seemed to be like 10 blank ones at the back. Plus every new chapter starts on the right hand side so you'll have these chapters that end with only one or two lines on a right hand page, the next left will be blank and then it starts on the next right. Just looked kinda odd and a bit wasteful.

I imagine a lot of it will be stuff he's covered in his retrospective videos but I figured I might as well get it, even just as a means of 'giving back' for like 15 years of free entertainment.
