MLB 2019-2020 Offseason Thread

Jeff Passan’s spoken to numerous players who have said the same thing, that a World Series title in a 50-game season just isn’t a representation of what baseball is supposed to be, and that a lot of players who are financially secure just aren’t going to play.

Aaron Judge etc might go play and knock off an easy year of service time, he has the clear incentive to play.  But Mike Trout who already has hundreds of millions left on his contract plus a baby due this summer whose birth he might have to miss if he plays, not so much.

Rob is just running away with the crown of worst commissioner.  At this rate the players first demand in the next CBA negotiations is going to be him getting fired.

Shulman goes in depth into some of the numbers which really makes this thing absurd.

MLBPA's hope is that calling Manfred's bluff will lead to the owners just caving and doing 72 games at full prorated pay.  By choosing to do a 48-game season, the league would be willingly sacrificing another full month's worth of TV revenue for every team.  And since this would come just as it was announced that MLB's won a new billion dollar TV contract from Turner, only the most ardent billionaire bootlickers could take the league's side at this point.

Pretty much exactly what is happening....rather than announcing a schedule right now, Manfred's deflecting the blame onto the players for an "unwillingness to negotiate" and is basically just trying to wind more and more days off the clock to the point where 48-54 games is all they'd have time to play anyway.  It's blindingly obvious that a third of the season is all the owners were ever going to allow to be played without fans.

Even if he did force the 48 game schedule now,  so many star players would sit out that it'd be glorified Spring Training.

You want me to play fantasy sports? This is what you get.

Wow, the actions your cowardice have caused you to take are shameful.  A world wide pandemic just because you were afraid to lose?  Terrible terrible.

If there's a prolonged strike/lockout, how much would you care when baseball returned?  And what would it take for you to really be excited again?

Baseball already has become my second favorite sport after football.   I don't bother watching most games in their entirety the last few years.  Its entirely possible baseball slips down the favorites list some more, particularly if the Red Sox aren't competitive for a few years.
