The playing for your country through a grandparent’s nationality has always seemed odd to me, and honestly it’s usually players that aren’t good enough for their country of origin. Gareth Southgate will announce his squad at St George’s Park and Rice is set to be included after the West Ham midfielder switched his international allegiance from Ireland. Rice was on Tuesday named as Ireland’s young player of the year, despite having chosen not to play for the country again. The award was voted for by the Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland. “At the time of the vote, Declan Rice was an Ireland international and qualified for the young player category in a year that saw him win three senior caps,” the Football Association of Ireland said. The Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton is set to be recalled by Southgate after missing the World Cup because of injury and starting the season behind Joe Hart at Turf Moor. The in-form Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse is under serious consideration, two years after winning his only cap, and Southgate is weighing up selection issues surrounding several of England’s Under-21 players. Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka and the Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn are highly rated by the England manager, but preparations for the Under-21 European Championship this summer may well take precedence if injuries do not bite the senior side. Among other players to have been monitored is the uncapped Wolves captain Conor Coady. England play at home against the Czech Republic a week on Friday and in Montenegro three days later. England won 5-1 but the match was overshadowed by racist chanting from some home fans directed at several England players, including Danny Rose. Montenegro will also have to display a Uefa banner with the wording '#EqualGame' at their next game and have been fined 20,000 euros (£17,253). That fine was for different charges of setting off fireworks, throwing objects, crowd disturbances and blocking stairways. In a statement the Football Association said: "We hope that their next home match being played behind closed doors sends out a message that racism has no place in football or in wider society." Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out were critical of the penalty given, saying in a statement: "Ever since England's black players received this shocking abuse we have called for the strongest punishment. Wan-Bissaka did not play for Manchester United on Monday because of injury and pulled out of the most recent England squad with a back problem. Abraham and Tomori have been selected for the first time and two other Chelsea players have been included by Gareth Southgate: Mason Mount and Ross Barkley. Tomori, who has played for England underage teams, is also eligible to play for Canada and Nigeria. Alli might have hoped for a recall after his return to fitness but Southgate has preferred Barkley, Mount and James Maddison in the more creative midfield positions. There is also a place in the squad for Fabian Delph.
