What Did You Watch Today? 2023 edition

Recommended Posts

Got around to watching Bros finally, and I actually really liked it.

I found the sex scenes / hook up scenes hillarious, and mostly because of how relatable it was. As a whole, despite being a typical rom-com, it really played well on the depictions of gay dating, and struggles of gay relationships (I've definitely been told by someone I was seeing that I should be less myself, in terms of what I talked about / activism, etc. ... I've also been on the otherside and sabotaged what could've been good relationship because the other person was "too gay") ... the infidelities, the polyamourous stuff, the debates about what is gay enough, not gay enough, bi-erasure... jokes about the lesbian characters, I mean... it was all exagerated for comedy, but I laughed because of how much of it I've personally experienced.

Anyways, I really recommend it.

watched The Northman over the weekend. I thought it was pretty good.

Watching the DVD commentary now and enjoying Robert Eggers notice all the little bits of the film that probably bug him and nobody else. Which, tbh, if I was in his postion I'd probably also do the same thing.

I've started watching through Twin Peaks again. I think I've watched it through 3 times total before (though the revival series I've only seen once) but I enjoy it just as much on every watch. Dale Cooper is one of my favourite characters in all of television history (I even have a little POP vinyl of him next to my TV).

Also I can see why teenage me was so interested in the show - Lara Flynn Boyle, Madchen Amick and Sherilyn Fenn are all 10s.

Just finished watching The Sinner on Netflix.

It was a USA limited series, intended for only 1 season, but kept getting renewed.  The name of the series only makes sense if it was kept to 1 season.

It was really great.  Its a mystery series, but more along the Columbo/Poker Face "Howcatchem" rather then a "Whodunit" format.  Not much comedy in it though

It ran for 4 seasons, with Bill Pullman, as the star, being the only consistent actor.

Season 3 kinda sucks, only saved by Matt Bomer being a fantastic actor

I watched Soylent Green for the first time. It was dystopian in a way I doubt modern movies would attempt.

I finally know how Soylent Green is made!

it's a classic. I watched it loads when I was younger and had a massive retro sci fi phase

I've watched the first three seasons and was massively disappointed by season 3 but I thought season 1 and 2 (particularly season 1) were really good. Season 4 is on my watch list but I'm not sure when I'll get to it.

Yea, S3 was a massive disappointment.  Like I said, it was only really saved, imo, because Matt Bomer is just great in everything

Marc Maron: From Bleak to Dark on HBO Max

I've never watched his standup before, nor have I listened to his podcast.  I'm really only familiar with Maron because of GLOW.

But man, this was a great special.  Laughed at a lot of stuff in it

2Fast2Furious: Continuing my "Watch all the Fast Movies before X (where X represents Fast X, the 10th film)"  It was alright, I actually think I liked it more than the first one, I think it definitely flowed better as a story.   But the dialogue was horrendous and Paul Walker's acting skills land somewhere between first year acting student and porn star.  When Ludacris is a significantly better actor than both your leads, that's not a good thing.  Or maybe I'm just vastly underrating Luda as a thespian.

Mrs. Krabby and I watched M3GAN last night, it was pretty good and, at points, just absurd (in a goofy way). Worth watching though we liked it.

We also watched Honey, I Shrunk The Kids with Lil Krabby which is just classic hahaha

Finally got around to watching Ted Lasso and I can see why it was praised so much.  Only got done with S1, but his wholesomeness and overly optimistic outlook is just so infectious.

If you wanna be a completionist, you have to watch Better Luck Tomorrow, The Turbo Charged Prelude, and Los Bandoleros as well.

I just finished Season 1 Sunday, and so much this. It's so fucking wholesome and made me so happy watching it

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift

Han’s great.  I have no idea what they were thinking casting a guy with the thickest Alabama accent they could find as the main character.  That was rough enough, plus he looks 35 and he’s playing a high school student.

On the rapper turned actor front, (Lil’) Bow Wow was surprisingly good.  Not a bad story but did end up feeling pretty low stakes.  Not a bad entry though.

The cameo at the end is all you really need.

Pressure Cooker, on Netflix.

Its a cooking competition, but with a twist: There's no host, and most (but not all) episodes, the competitors are also the judges. 11 chefs, competing for $100,000.

(In case you're wondering how it works with no host, they get their instructions and other information from a ticket machine like the one they receive food orders from at a restaurant.)

Definitely recommend it. But there's one competitor who stuck around longer than he should have. That's my only complaint.

Just finished Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Knew very little going into it and it's been a few years, but just watched Banshees of Inisherin yesterday and saw Martin McDonagh made both of them so thought I'd give it a go, and it was definitely worth it. Both are really good films, and Martin McDonagh is fantastic.
