AMC's "The Walking Dead"

I thought the the episode was quite a bit different from the rest of the season so far. The pace may have felt similar but the direction, setup and narrative certainly felt different to me.

Well, as different as a fifth season episode of a show about people on the run from zombies can be.

I think I'm done with the Walking Dead. It is so one note. The other great television shows had fun and light hearted moments, moments where we felt happy. And not happy because a character didn't die or something like that. I get that it is a zombie show and it is going to be bleak, but it is just grief porn at this point.

Last week I say I'm done watching the show.

This week they add the first gay character. I wanted to be done with it. Why? Why do they do this to me?

I thought Tara was gay? Or it was at least hinted at during the governor's return episodes? But I assume this Aaron fella is from the comics?

She is.

Oh yeah. Forgot about that whole subplot in those Governor episodes. Those episodes were terrible.

I'm not understanding the letdown that a lot of people have had with the past two episodes. I think they've been very good storytelling episodes.

I think they're actually doing a great job depicting how a group of people would react to major losses in Bob, Beth and Tyreese and then finding out that Eugene's "I can save us" story was bullshit. Sure, it's going a little slow but not every episode needs to be jam packed with action. Obviously, they are beating us over the heads with some of it like how Sasha is dealing with Bob and Tyreese's deaths, how hard Maggie and Daryl are dealing with Beth's and just the overall despair everyone is feeling now with no "home" or hope on the horizon. I doubt the whole season will stay like this especially with Aaron showing up at the end of the episode.

I've invested a lot of time into the show and these characters really do grow on you, so it's good to see some of them still struggling with the zombie apocalypse instead of everyone having Rick's attitude. I loved the scene with Rick talking about his grandfather and the war, even with the horrible "We are the walking dead" line and then Daryl just cutting that down, basically saying not everyone can just bottle it up and cut themselves off.

To use a comic book as reference, it seems like a lot of people just want to skip to the ending (of the season) instead of seeing how or why they got there.

I was half and half on that episode. It did a good job of showing the outlook of the group, but the show is utterly miserable as a whole, so having an episode dedicated to it didn't really need to happen. I mean seriously, throughout five seasons I can't think of one moment that's made me laugh off the top of my head. I know it's a zombie show and shouldn't be a laugh a minute, but Christ, someone crack a joke every once in a while (this is the series as a whole, not this episode).

Whilst I did find the episode okay, one part I hated was that they had an amazing dramatic scene with them pushing against the barn door and then... skip. That was a shitty way to end that scene, which was arguably one of the most exciting couple of minutes the show has had in a while for me. I get why they did it, but it really took me out of those last five minutes.

I think the episode would be fine if the show didn't already feel so directionless. These last two episodes where they're literally wandering aimlessly... it's boring. I wish they'd have a goal they're actually progressing on. "Let's go to Washington!" is great and all... but they never do anything about it.

This show could desperately do with a change of scenery too.

One thing that did really irk me in this episode. Maggie is all depressed and people are trying to cheer her up, but not once does Glenn give a shit. I mean, he comes over whilst the girl is in the trunk, but he doesn't really seem to give a toss about her mental state. I feel like that unintentionally made Glenn feel like an uncaring asshole.
