Cats was... okay. Songs were done well. CGI a bit all over the place. Thought the whole thing flowed well enough. Basically, its pretty much bang average (2.5/5 etc) but almost feels decebt compared to the reviews.

Continues to confuse me that Adam Sandler has been snubbed at all of these big awards shows for his performance in Uncut Gems, don't get it. Or Uncut Gems just getting no recognition in general.

Unsurprising, but still ridiculous, that no women were nominated for directing and only 2 POC were nominated out of all 4 acting categories. Ana de Armas is a particularly glaring omission.

On the positive end, Parasite and Jojo Rabbit got several deserved nominations. Taika should’ve gotten a directing nomination though.

Who should have been nominated?

The Oscars are a self congratulatory wank fest anyway.

Arjen made a pretty good list to start with. It’s just a problem the Oscars (and many award shows) have always had. It’s becoming more glaring over the years as we’ve heard more public discussion about it. (“We” meaning white people - POC have seen it from the start.)

To add to Arjen’s list, there are several great performances in Parasite, I previously listed Ana de Armas, and Taika gave a great performance in Jojo Rabbit. Plus, I’ve heard great things about Queen & Slim. I’m sure there’s more I’m not thinking of right now.

Plus, of the actors who actually were nominated, I’d imagine only a few were as deserving as, say, Ana de Armas or some of the others.

Most nominations are based off of name value, anyway, so the longer you've been around, the higher the chance of you getting nominated because of how established you are. It's why Anthony Hopkins is nominated for basically just existing while being filmed during the Two Popes, or Kathy Bates is nominated for one of the biggest wankfests Eastwood has directed in a while.

I loved Marriage Story, the Irishman and Little Women, but getting two nominations each seems excessive when there's a billion other acting credits out there. Out of the twenty acting nominations available, there are only 13 movies, so almost half of them are from the same movies. Ali Wong, Park So-dam, Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Taylor Russell, Awkwafina, Jimmie Fails, Eddie Murphy, Kelvin Harrison Jr, I dunno, just felt like they didn't have to give Leo or Pacino another nomination.

Due to Oscar nominations leading to more work for actors, I feel like it shouldn't just be a small select group of people that seem to be nominated frequently off the back of stronger performances from previous years, getting nominated for less stellar work they do in the current year.

And the directing and best film category, massive eurgh. It's like the Academy Awards are only for old white men.

I struggle to be interested in a lot of the films getting a lot of oscar attention. In particular Joker and The Irishman.

I booked tickets to see The Lighthouse when it gets released here at the end of the month. That I am very excited about.

I'd hope to get to Knives Out, Jojo Rabbit and Little Women eventually.

Little Women is fantastic.

I was halfway through the Lighthouse, and the first 20 minutes or so are certainly something, but I was watching it half-asleep so am going to get around to watching it in full sometime soon.

Also, I see no nominations for Booksmart and it deserves several.

Booksmart ruled but literally every time I asked someone who I knew would like it "hey, did you see Booksmart?" the answer was no. Shortly before I quit the movie theater I did an employee orientation on Regal's version of MoviePass, and it opened with an executive openly going "everyone who saw Booksmart loved it, how the hell do we get more people to go watch movies like that?"

Anyway, yeah, the acting fields are... honestly, "bad" isn't the word, I actually think pretty much all the performances I've actually seen that are nominated are good-to-great. But it is brutally white, with the only non-white nominee coming from the exact same Oscar-bait stuff that the Academy loves. Scarlett Johansson likely beating out both of The Farewell's best shots at a nomination is grating in particular given... well, the Scarlett Johansson of it all.

Is Ford v Ferrari good? It looks incredibly boring.

It's no Rush, and there's definite creative liberties made to make Ford look more great than they actually were (fudging the timeline). But for racing fans it's an enjoyable flick.
