Nintendo Megathread

Is there a reason I should buy a Switch over a "New" 3DS XL (or vice versa)? My friend brought up Zelda, but I've never cared for those games, so... Plus, Earthbound is only available on the 3DS (and Beginnings is only on the Wii U, wtf...) so that's a +1 in favor of getting a 3DS in my book. Also, eBay has them for decent prices, and usually with some games, so that's something too. I had one listing saved earlier this week that had an SD card included that had 1,000+ games on it, but it didn't last very long :(

After 11 hours of play time, I finally finished first in Tetris 99. That game is addicting, but fun.

Reasons for 3DS

  1. Cheaper (both system and games)
  2. You get access to not only 3DS games, but DS games
  3. Deeper 1st and 2nd party Nintendo catalogue
  4. Excels in niche genres (JRPGs, puzzle games)
  5. 3DS is more durable

Reasons for Switch

  1. Better tech, meaning games look and run better
  2. Has an incredible line-up of indie games;
  3. Has an interesting line-up of third party titles (some with questionable quality)
  4. Nothing on 3DS is anywhere near the quality of Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 and Breath of the Wild (I know you say you never cared for Zelda, but BOTW is amazing)
  5. Switch is hot right now and you may regret buying a handheld console nobody is talking or playing anymore.
  6. Nintendo's first and second party studios are going to crank out Switch games because they no longer have to spread between a handheld and traditional console.
  7. Switch is hot and as a result, a lot of great games go on sale.

I personally feel like a 3DS is a bad investment, but that is because I have not played mine since I got my Switch.

I agree with RPS - and yeah, while the 3DS has a lot of amazing games and the ability to play DS games the situation at least in my area is that a lot of those games are impossible to find, prohibitively expensive or digital only. And these days 3DS digital sales are deader than a doornail.

In my effort to avoid the Show this year and to help pass the time during my flights to and back from California, I bought RBI Baseball 19. Fun little game considering it’s only $29.99.

The first iteration that came out with the new consoles was complete bollocks. Like, undeniably awful... and that's kept me from even thinking about trying it. Same as EA's NBA Live. I'm told that I would like it better than 2K, by my buddies, but the first one to come out for this generation was terrible. To both games' credit, every year since, I've had people telling me that both are improving steadily.

But I'm loyal to The Show... and I'd prefer an old school NBA Jam type Basketball game to a sim. Which I was hoping NBA Playgrounds would be, but apparently that's not very good.

NBA Live this year was ten times the game 2K was in my opinion - IE; it was fun and I could progress without spending ONLY my time on the game. The systems for single player were so awesome as well.

FFVII on the switch just feels right. Started playing in bed last night and I think I can die happy now?

Even if you're not planning on buying it, it's hard not to appreciate the significance of its Switch release. After 22 years, and following the saga of its development from SNES to Playstation, Final Fantasy VII is at last on a Nintendo console.

Just out of curiosity, what made you change your opinion on it?

The home run derby was fun but the controls in the actual game are clunky. The pitching is like playing the original Nintendo. The fielding is clunky and the batting is all or nothing. I either hit a home run or dribbled the ball back to the pitcher. It’s just very arcadey but not done very well. I’ll just go back to The Show since I’ve been told it has improved over last years.

You know what Baseball games were fantastically fun? The two Ken Griffey Jr games on the n64. Those were great.

That was a good one too!

I also had Bo Jackson baseball and if you struck out Bo a cutscene would play of him snapping his bat.

I had Bases Loaded 2 as well, it was generic but an okay game. I rented Baseball Stars a lot too.

I looooooved Baseball Stars. Being able to buy and sell players was such an incredibly cool thing to do. There was a baseball game where you could create your own logo too. I can’t remember what it was called, but I remember my dad spending hours on the Yankee logo with the bat and hat and I accidentally deleted it. 😟

My son is turning three this month and is obsessed with Super Mario Party. He's just getting to where he's able to understand the controls (especially the punching of the dice block) and we've been letting him play with his own character. He asks to play every night I'm off of work lately. So much fun.

My son is 2 in 19 days, he has no interest in watching me play or playing himself :(

I even tried with the new Yoshi demo!

Too young. My youngest just wants to hold the buttons and press them and she is 2.
