As much as I understand and appreciate what analytics are trying to do, I think the growing contingent online of people who treat them like gospel just makes discussing sports about as fun as doing your taxes.

There are baseball players out there I can see with my own eyes that they are very one-dimensional, yet you can't say it online without the calculator crew going "WELL ACTUALLY"

Joey "Well Actually" Gallo

xG is much more like a baseball statistic such as .AVG or .SLG, ones we all refer to normally, as opposed to wRAA.

It's a completely blunt instrument that people bizarrely interpret as being a clever metric. It does what it does, but it's certainly not the magic bullet that the folk trying to flog books pretend it is.

Every time I watched Germany play they looked like they were creating a ton of great chances. There's always a team that seems to have the worst luck at the World Cup, and this year it's definitely them.

I don't think Germany are out because of bad luck. They're out because their transition defending was the worst of any nation at the World Cup. Germany made Borussia Dortmund's transition defending look world class!

And Serbians knot it up 6 minutes later!

You gotta think that at best, Cameroon ties Brazil which means the Swiss just have to hold it to a draw to get through. If Cameroon does go up though - the Swiss might be sweating
