Full story:

Rockstar has announced that the Grand Theft Auto V release date has been delayed from this spring to September 17, 2013 "in order to allow additional development time".

“We know this is about four months later than originally planned and we know that this short delay will come as a disappointment to many of you, but, trust us, it will be worth the extra time,” the company said.

“GTAV is a massively ambitious and complex game and it simply needs a little more polish to be of the standard we and, more importantly, you require. “To all Grand Theft Auto fans, please accept our apologies for the delay, and our promise that the entire team here is working very hard to make the game all it can be. We are doing all we can to help ensure it will meet if not exceed your expectations come September – we thank you for your support and patience.”

Grand Theft Auto V has only officially been announced for Xbox 360 and PS3, although Rockstar has said other platforms are still ”open for consideration", meaning the game could yet launch on PC and Wii U too.

Rockstar also said today that the company is looking forward to sharing more information about the game in the coming months, including plans for its "brand new and ambitious approach to open world multiplayer", which it has said little about so far.

We're guessing this means no more plans for a box art unveiling in January, either.

GTA on Wii U in September would be a major leg up for Nintendo before PS4 and NextBox launch.
