The Simpsons

It would just make more sense to kill off Apu rather than recast, considering that the stereotyping is more than just the voice. In that same regardless it might be best to kill off every character in the series and start from scratch since they all play off stereotypes and if you can't have one, you shouldn't have any of them.

The point of all this being that marginalized people have said “hey, that sucks that you do that because it affects us personally and it’s hard enough to be us as it is” and the general response from the show has been “lol, cry more.” And that’s massively disappointing.

I don't really mind white voice actors portraying non-white characters or vice-versa, unless there's a slew of voice actors of colour not getting work that I'm unfamiliar with that needs to be addressed, but white voice actors doing ethnic stereotype voices like Apu's should be a thing of the past.

But appealing to a cost-based argument doesn't really work in terms of The Simpsons - the show costs an insane amount to produce, and several voice actors have already taken voluntary pay cuts because for years FOX have been saying that the cost to produce a single episode is unsustainable under their current business model. The amount of money that long-term Simpsons voice actors make is insane.

The cost based issue was more relating to the world outside of The Simpsons, which is an old juggernaut that doesn't have many peers in terms of how they do things - their last-ability throws another wrench in there as well.

They've pretty much chosen not to care about it being garbage for nigh on 20 years, why start caring about things now?

In a section of the book devoted to burning Simpsons questions, writer Mike Reiss spends seven paragraphs responding to this one: “What do you say to people who say the show has gone downhill?” His response, in part: “When a show makes it to one hundred episodes, or a person makes it to a hundred years, that’s cause for celebration. Our show is a 658-year-old man. And you’re asking why it’s not as cute as it used to be? We’re lucky the Simpsons can still pee.”

I'm legitimately curious as to how many people commenting have seen the documentary.

Why would I, a straight white male, need to see it? Pfft.
