There's the argument that we wouldn't say similar for the men, but that's largely because we go out with a whimper early doors rather than very unluckily in the semis.

I would say that's my problem with it. But being fair, this is a pay disparity/focus on domestic league thing; average league-wide attendance for the highest level of women's soccer in England is 719 people, and that's where almost all of the English women's team (save Jodie Taylor, who plays in Portland in front of crowds of 15K). I can't imagine almost any of them are making a living from the game, and so in that regard it's sort of similar to how people talked about Tahiti at the Confederations Cup, where there was the one guy who was an actual full-time professional player and then the rest of them had their side-jobs brought up all the time.

It's worded really clumsily though. Almost like they're prize racehorses that will now be put out to pasture. The Olympics are next year, guys! They'll be in the Olympics, right?

Unfortunately...probably not, thanks to the whole "England vs GB" thing.

Yeah the energy and enthusiasm in this city for soccer has been incredible lately. the only time I have questioned the American interest in soccer was when gogo refused to go to a penalty shootout and instead settled for a draw. Pfffft draws, draws are dishonorable.

Well won't most of them play for GB in the Olympics then?

Also, yesterday's final was the most-watched soccer game in American history.  Beating out any of the men's games from 2014.

As Colly said, no they won't. Despite achieving the qualifying standard due to this World Cup performance, we will not be sending a team as the other Home Nations fear losing their sovereignty in the sport. They begrudgingly agreed to it for the London 2012 Olympics purely as we were the hosts, but it remains a one off despite England's best attempts to convince the others to agree to let us send a team to Rio 2016.
