Is what common? The 4-3? It and the 3-4 are very much the most common. In the NFL at least. The 4-2-5 is becoming more common in college football because of the huge emphasis on passing.

It's pretty similar to association football formations really. NFL tends to be primarily 4-3 and 3-4 as base packages. Offence tends to vary greatly from team-to-team and situation but you really just need to know what each positional player does to enjoy the game. Basically

QB - Passes or hands it to a HB

HB - Runs, catches, blocks (lines up behind or beside QB)

WR - Catches (lines up out wide)

TE - Blocks, Catches (lines up on the end of the offensive line or out wide)

Offensive line - Blocks (the big guys up front blocking for the QB/HB)

Everything else you'll learn as you go.

It's much easier to understand if looking at diagrams of formations rather than reading a description, I find. Maybe have a look online @MDK, I picked it up fairly quickly using diagrams and, I'll be honest, Madden.
