Someone help me: how is the leaked footage bad for Rockstar?

The footage really isn't.  Its just unfinished.

Source codes on the other hand...

Apparently Rockstar have been quoted that it won't add on any additional time to the release date due to this.

Since we don't know when the release date is, thats not saying much

No developer wants their game being seen in a state like it was. It is akin to an unedited movie with no SFX being leaked a year or so before release. I imagine everyone working on the game feels shitty about it.

Also in this age, it can be very negative for a game to look bad on Twitter or Reddit. Impacts the buzz of a game.

So you mean a lot of the BTS footage we see of movies?  With people in mo-cap suits in front of green screens?

That is basically what this is.  Seeing BTS footage of a AAA game in development

Well yes with the caveat that it was released against the creators wishes and taken illegally.

Gaming is a lot different than movies unfortunately. There's a sizable segment of movie fans who love to see how it's made, and the rest are always unconcerned with seeing an "unfinished product". Gaming doesn't have that luxury, there are streamers with millions of followers who constantly misinform people *how* games are made.

It's also rare that we see "making of" or unfinished movie clips released without a lot of framing devices - you'll generally see the mocap suits and green screens after you've already seen the finished product, as a "this is how it was done", or as part of a "making of" package that talks you through the process. Unfinished clips aren't just released into the wild like that. It would be potentially disastrous if a major movie had scenes leaked with half-finished special effects to an audience that didn't fully understand that they were half-finished.

There is definitely a point there around people not really knowing how games are made, and people misrepresenting that. Films are relatively easy to picture yourself in the position of an actor or director, even if you don't get all the details right, you have a sense of how it works, whereas to most of us video games may as well be magic. Seeing a game that's unfinished and looking a bit janky, most of us don't know whether fixing that's as simple as "dial up the slider marked 'realistic graphics' a few more notches" or a full year of forcing programmers to work twelve hour shifts.
