A Portuguese mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter has died after an event in the Republic of Ireland on Saturday.

Joao Carvalho was taken to hospital after being beaten in a fight at the National Stadium in Dublin by Charlie Ward, a team-mate of UFC champion Conor McGregor.

The 28-year-old underwent emergency brain surgery and was in a critical condition for 48 hours.

However, a statement from his Vitor Nobrega team confirmed his death.

"It is with great sorrow and sadness that we write these words, that the death of the athlete Joao Carvalho happened after 48 hours in critical condition," said the statement.

Total Extreme Fighting, who organised the event, said it was "deeply saddened" by news of the death.

"We extend our most sincere condolences to the family of Joao Carvalho and his team-mates in Team Nobrega," said Cesar Silva, CEO of Total Extreme Fighting.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with them. We'd also like to thank all sports fans for their concern and support. We will give whatever support we can to Joao's family."

John Kavanagh, who coaches Irishman McGregor, was in Ward's corner during the fight and asked people to respect the privacy of the Portuguese fighter's family.

Kavanagh also works with the Irish Amateur Pankration Association (IAPA), which represents MMA in the Republic, and said the group will be working with Total Extreme Fighting to establish "all relevant facts and event processes" in the incident.

Police have arrested a suspect: http://mmajunkie.com/2016/05/police-arrest-suspect-in-hit-and-run-death-of-bellator-fighter-jordan-parsons

After an intense, six-day investigation, DBPD traffic homicide investigators have arrested a 28-year-old Boca Raton man for the fatal crash that took the life of 25-year-old MMA fighter Jordan Parsons. Dennis Wright, whose license has been suspended six times, is facing multiple charges, including leaving the scene of a crash causing death. Investigators have recovered the damaged 2013 Range Rover Sport involved in the crash.

The crash happened at 12:33 a.m. May 1. Parsons was walking across Federal Highway at Lindell Boulevard. Wright, whose driver license is suspended, was driving his mother’s Range Rover south on Federal. A witness told investigators he thinks Wright was driving between 100 and 120 miles per hour when he hit Parsons, who was in the crosswalk. Parsons was wearing headphones and may have not heard the SUV coming.

Wright never stopped. Neither did his friends driving behind him in their Mercedes, which followed the Range Rover as it continued southbound. Meanwhile, DBPD Officer Derek Chahine, who had been nearby on a traffic stop, used a medical blanket from the trunk of his patrol car to apply pressure to Parson’s catastrophic leg injury until Delray Beach Fire Rescue arrived and transported Parsons to Delray Medical Center. He died May 4 from injuries sustained in the crash.

The following day, an anonymous tipster gave investigators Wright’s name. They quickly discovered that Wright’s mother owns a grey 2013 Range Rover Sport and were able to determine that Wright was driving the vehicle the night of the crash. Wright made an effort to have the damaged Range Rover repaired at a local body shop, but the owner refused to do the work, so Wright rented a bay at a storage facility and hid the SUV. Investigators recovered it on Friday, and it was missing the driver’s side mirror officers recovered at the scene. Wright, who arrived at the police department Saturday afternoon with his attorney, also faces charges of driving while license suspended as a habitual offender and tampering with evidence. His criminal history includes arrests for DUI, disorderly intoxication, marijuana possession and assault on an officer or firefighter, among other charges.

The crash investigation is ongoing. Witnesses told investigators that Wright was at Buddha Sky Bar on East Atlantic Avenue Saturday night with friends. If anyone has information about Wright’s whereabouts that night, please contact Officer Ron Brown or Sgt. Jeffrey Rasor at (561) 243-7800.

120 Mph?  Wow, this is so sad, the guy shouldn't have been driving :(

I wish there was a way to keep people like that from driving. License suspension is all well and good but I'd wager that a majority of people who are habitual offenders in that category probably don't bat an eyelid at a punishment like that, they just carry on knowing the risks they pose to themselves and others.

Jason Miller is fighting Luke Barnatt this weekend and weighed in at 209lbs, missing the LHW 206lb limit.

Which is doubly bad when it's a fight at 185lbs...

Former fighter and matchmaker Zach Light has filed a wrongful termination lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court against former employer Bellattor MMA and parent company Viacom.

He makes some daming accusationts towards Bellator including allegedly forging medicals of one fighter and allegedly letting fighters submit medicals that were performed by someone who is not a licensed physician.

One of the judges, Rob Hinds, did himself no favours with an interview he did after the fact, and Jimmy Smith took him apart over it.

Cageside

It's long but worth reading because Smith does a great job in making clear that Rob Hinds should never judge again, not just because of that decision, but because Hinds clearly has no idea what he's doing.

They've caught the bastards.

Anthony Getschel, 23, is charged with second degree murder, criminal negligence causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, and fail to stop at scene of accident involving death.

Jordan Wagner, 21, is charged with accessory after the fact to murder.

Edmonton Police

Looking it up, second degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence, and they have to serve 10-25 years before being eligible for parole, although there is no guarantee they'd actually get parole.
