Blackpool chairman Karl Oyston confirms that he held talks with Billy Davies over the vacant manager's job at Bloomfield Road earlier this week.

"I would like to place on record that the club met and discussed the manager's position with Billy Davies on Monday evening," Oyston tells Blackpool's website.

"Contrary to speculation, I can confirm that the meeting concluded with both parties agreeing to speak again on Tuesday.

"I spoke with Billy on two occasions yesterday and he has decided to follow another opportunity, which is a decision we fully appreciate and understand."

They really just need to appoint Thompson at Bloomfield Road, though.

More on Blackpool though:

Oyston confirms that Sean O'Driscoll is the only person who has been offered the Blackpool job since Michael Appleton left to take charge at Blackburn last month.

"It has been well documented that we have approached a number of people regarding our managerial vacancy, in order to conduct preliminary discussions and ascertain interest from either party," Oyston tells Blackpool's website.

"We will continue with this process and we will continue to do so in the correct manner. However, we have only offered the position to one person and, unfortunately, that person decided to accept a position at Bristol City."

Portsmouth face expulsion from the Football League unless the Pompey Supporters Trust buys them and takes the club out of administration by the end of the season.

Earlier on Thursday, Portsmouth's administrators, PKF, received a new offer to buy the League One club from football financier Keith Harris, but the Football League said it would not accept any new bids.

"Any change of preferred bidder at such a late stage would only create further uncertainty," a statement said.

"[it is] not in the wider interests of the League and its member clubs.

"In the event the PST bid does not succeed and Portsmouth do not exit administration before the end of the current playing season, the club will lose its membership of the Football League."

The Football League's Insolvency Policy does not allow a club to begin two consecutive seasons in administration.

Portsmouth's administrator Trevor Birch said: "We note the Football League board's statement and will consider its implications."

PST spokesman Colin Farmery has welcomed the news that new bids will not be considered.

He said: "It's a momentous occasion because it really is now Trust or bust - the future of Portsmouth Football Club effectively appears to be in our hands.

"I think the Football League, to be honest, are actually just a bit fed up with it dragging on.

"This is a clear message to the administrators that they want this sorted out sooner rather than later and a sudden bid appearing over the horizon at the last minute is not what they wanted to hear.

"I think this now confirms the fact that it is us or liquidation and we hope now that fans will rally round to our cause."

Pompey have been in administration since February 2012 and are said to be around £60m in debt.

The PST have been approved by the Football League as well as the club's creditors.

Championship side Birmingham City have been approached by a sports management company representing a consortium interested in purchasing the club.

Birmingham International Holdings Limited (BIHL), the company that owns the club, said they were approached on 23 and 31 January by the unnamed group.

Blues stated last May that they were seekingnew investors.

Former QPR chairman Gianni Paladini haspreviously admitted his desire to lead a consortium to take over the club.

However it is unclear who the latest bidder is.

In a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange, BIHL said: "The company has been formally approached on 23 January 2013 and 31 January 2013 by a sports management company, who has indicated that it will be able to lead a consortium which will consider the purchase of Birmingham City Football Club Plc, (the) company's subsidiary.

"The company's lawyers are currently in contact with the interested party with the view to clarifying matters of this approach."

Despite the club not officially being up for sale, Blues chairman Peter Pannu revealed last November that they were in talks with two parties interested in buying the club.

One of those parties was reported to be Paladini, who claimed to have a £30m bid for the club rejected.

The club have failed to publish their financial figures for the past two years, and major shareholder Carson Yeung is awaiting trial in Hong Kong having been charged with money laundering.

In January, England international Jack Butland was sold to Stoke City after it was revealed that Blues were open to offers for any of their first-team players.

On the pitch, Birmingham, who reached the Championship play-offs last season, lie 16th in the league table and are just six points off the relegation zone.

Methinks the Portsmouth Supporters Group were attempting to butter up Portsmouth FC so that another buyer came in at the last minute.

If the League are blocking other buyers then they're screwed, there's no way that the Portsmouth Supporters Group could afford to run a football club like Portsmouth, even if they take on a fraction of the debts.

So aapparently Charlton's pitch is a mess and you can barely play the ball along the floor, so we decide to wait til we're 1-0 down to to put our near 7 foot striker on for 2 minutes. At least we've landed an equaliser.

Amazing results for Bournemouth today. I think that they go into the automatic promotion spots now. And Watford's point against Palace is not looking too bad at all now.

Edit: not quite the top two but only a point off!

Still us in that spot but you'll probably go top on Tuesday since we've decided we don't want to take the opportunity to go top.

Saying that Swindon have also decided this. As have Brentford. And Tranmere are doing their best to throw it away too.
