EWB's Top 100 Artists of 2012

I only know "Fireflies" by Owl City. It's inoffensive enough, but it's not good.

Eminem had a couple of good songs, but I'm amazed anyone still cares.

System Of A Down are awful. They really, really are. "Experimental" heavy metal for people who have never listened to genuinely experimental or ambitious music. They're just annoying. Hatred is tenfold because I DJ a heavy metal night, and apparently most people's perceptions of heavy metal are "Pantera and anything that was played on Kerrang in 2002", because literally every time I get requests for fucking "Chop Suey" and "Halo" by Soil. Fuck, last week, it wasn't even a metal night, I just happened to be playing in the same venue, and a girl requested that I play something by Puddle Of Mudd or Hoobastank. So, in summary, fuck System Of A Down.

The Kinks are bloody brilliant. I agree that there's some duff album tracks, but that was pretty much how albums worked back then. They have more than enough absolute classic songs to make up for it, though - You Really Got Me, Lola, Waterloo Sunset, Big Black Smoke, I'm Not Like Everybody Else, Victoria, David Watts, See My Friend, Death Of A Clown, All Day And All Of The Night, Come Dancing, Dandy, Dedicated Follower Of Fashion, Have Another Drink, Alcohol, Holloway Jail, Nothin' In The World Can Stop Me Worryin' 'Bout That Girl, The Village Green Preservation Society ....and I could probably still go on and on and on and on. Absolutely brilliant band, one of the best pop songwriters, and one of those bands that can really capture the feel of a place and a time in their music. So many of their songs are London, to me. Also, Ray Davies is easily one of the best live acts I have ever seen.

A Day To Remember are really, really not my thing. So not my thing that I don't even know if they're good at what their thing is.

Fireflies was catchy, but that was two years ago and I'm genuinely surprised he's got a place on this list.

Actually surprised Eminem's that low. He'll always be one of my favourite artists and Eminem Show is probably my favourite album ever. He was such a big part of my childhood musically, I think I'll always hold him in such high regard. I know the words to most of the songs and I don't think I'll ever get bored of him, though I definitely prefer his old stuff.

System of a Down are fucking fun. There's like a good six songs which me and my friends could always stick on at a party and just have a laugh with. They're not great or anything, but just really fun.

Haven't listened enough to the Kinks, but the songs I have heard I'm a big fan of.

So for me, not a bad update.

Owl City are awesome. They're the definitely one of my picks to listen to when I'm in the mood for fun music. Their album last year was glorious.

Eminem will always be that guy that has song I've liked. It's dopey, silly songs, but I like most of them. A lot of stuff is bad too, though.

System Of A Down is wonderful. One of my favourite rock bands ever. Plus they had that one porn song where it was funny the first time I heard it.

I've heard a few Kink songs and they are beautiful in every single way.

That other thing looks absolutely horrid, though.

I like four out of five? Awesome!

It's just now occurring to me that nothing has received more than 2 votes so far. Maybe a Top 100 was a bit overambitious?

Michael Jackson actually got 3 votes (and barely made the list); the rest have essentially all had 1 person vote them real high and someone else put them low on their list but this multiplies the 14 or 15 pointer to 28 or 30. It's going to start changing soon, but nobody was featured on more than 8 lists I think.

For some reason, Japan has just started advertising Cher Lloyd's album and FOX Japan has been advertising "Swagger Jagger". About 30 seconds into the video clip my wife turned to me and said "What IS a swagger Jagger? What is she talking about? Is this a comedy video?"

....and my wife is the least niche music person in the world.

Her first mistake was thinking their was some meaning to Swagger Jagger.

You will have heard Kinks songs Naitch (and probably SRN too)...

Sunny Afternoon

I'd be highly if surprised if you've not heard any (if not all) of those.

Edit: Man, I wish I'd voted for The Kinks now.

I recognise All Day and All of the Night, and You Really Got Me.

Frank Sinatra is great. The Who are the big rock band that I've never really gotten into at all or had any driving desire to. Rush are fun to play on Rock Band but I'd never really listen to their music willingly otherwise.

There are other bands but their names and images prompt no response from me.

Hey I have minimal complaints about this round of bands! I need to listen to more AJJ and Sinatra, and I don't really dig Alkaline Trio at all. Electric Wizard are one of my favourite stoner/doom bands.

Never heard of Alkaline Trio but looking them up on the Internet, it doesn't seem it would be something I would like. Yay for Frank Sinatra even though I have only heard three of his albums, and even those being his more serious, depressive stuff. Yay for Type O Negative, even though I mostly like their early stuff. The Who are a band I need to get into when I have the time and patience and the same thing with Rush. And hell yes for Electric Wizard!

Not so many complaints this time around, woo!
