Max Verstappen will have his first official Formula 1 race weekend outing at the Japanese Grand Prix, with Toro Rosso confirming he will drive in first free practice. The Dutchman, who will race for the Italian outfit in 2015, has been waiting to find out if the FIA would grant him a superlicence so could begin his preparations. That approval has now been given, meaning Verstappen will run in FP1.

Caterham believes a new front wing that it will bring to the Japanese Grand Prix should lift it clear of main Formula 1 rival Marussia.
The Leafield-based team is hoping to raise itself off the bottom of the constructors' championship in a bid to secure lucrative commercial rights income.
It delivered the first part of an update package in Belgium in August, and team principal Manfredi Ravetto claims that new parts should keep Caterham pushing forwards from this weekend.
"We are planning to run a new front wing in Suzuka and this should allow us to catch, and to properly catch up, on the main mid-grid pack. We don't see Marussia as a direct competitor any more. We expect to catch up on Sauber and Lotus."

The Honda engine!

Elsewhere, Kamui Kobayashi will keep his Caterham race seat for this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix, while Roberto Merhi gets another outing in Friday practice. And, Simona de Silvestro's Formula 1 career hangs in the balance after negotiations to resolve a contractual dispute between her management and the Sauber team broke down, AUTOSPORT can reveal. The dispute means de Silvestro will no longer drive for the Hinwil team with which she was hoping to graduate to F1 in 2015, though AUTOSPORT understands she will retain her status as an affiliated driver.

This is what we call burying heads in sand...

The Caterham Formula 1 team says its Leafield factory continues to function as normal despite speculation that goods were seized by authorities on Wednesday.
Caterham is facing an uncertain future since the team was sold to a group of investors advised by Colin Kolles in July.
Speculation was rife on Wednesday that bailiffs had seized goods from the team and that all its staff had been asked to leave the factory.
High Court enforcement officers The Sheriff's Office published a list of goods it claimed belong to Caterham, including parts to be used in this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix and a 2013 test car.
Caterham labelled the rumours as "unfounded and unsubstantiated" and claimed its preparations for the Suzuka race were going ahead as planned.
"There have been unfounded and unsubstantiated rumours concerning actions against 1MRT, the entrant and owner of CaterhamF1," said Caterham in a statement.
"An action was threatened yesterday against a supplier company to 1MRT. This company is not owned by 1MRT and it has no influence over the entry of CaterhamF1 or the entrant.
"Also contrary to uncontrolled rumours, all operations are currently in place at Leafield and the race team is doing its preparation in Japan."

Simona di Silvestro won't have a Sauber drive next year because her financial backing has gone, it seems.

And Alonso has given the strongest hint he's on his way out of Ferrari after he said there's no guarantee he'll wait until his contract ends before leaving the team. You'd have to guess that means he's on the way to McLaren and, given that it's Suzuka this weekend, you have to think that Honda will want to announce the deal in the next few days for full effect. Eddie Jordan's also suggested that it's possible that both Alonso and Vettel might be at McLaren next year, which would be *crazy*...though if Vettel goes to McLaren, then maybe Alonso would be tempted by the other Red Bull seat?

Vergne won't stay at STR unfortunately, they had pretty much said they'd given up on him before all this went down so I expect they'll go to Carlos Sainz Jr or another 17 year old from their young driver scheme.

It's a shame that Button looks like he'll be out of a drive, he deserved to leave under his own terms.
