Formula One 2024

Funny Gene Haas is complaining about having a third tier team, when he can barely be bothered to invest money into the team.

Honestly, Gunther isn't the best principal and there are probably better out there, but for years he's managed to build a respectable racing team on a shoestring budget and tinpot sponsorships, and it's always going to have a thankless end.

I wish his successor good luck, but I am hard pressed to expect them to make a leap up the table unless Gene Haas actually commits to it.

Formula 1 has announced that the Spanish Grand Prix will be held in Madrid from 2026 to 2035 following an agreement with IFEMA MADRID to bring an all-new circuit to the Spanish capital, incorporating both street and non-street sections.

Built around the world-class IFEMA exhibition centre, the 5.47km circuit – subject to FIA homologation and final design specification – will feature 20 corners, with a projected qualifying lap time of 1 minute 32 seconds.

It is projected to have capacity to host more than 110,000 fans per day across grandstand, general admission, and VIP hospitality, while there are plans to grow the circuit’s capacity to 140,000 per day over the first half of the agreement, making Madrid one of the largest venues on the F1 calendar.

Located five minutes from the Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suarez airport, the Spanish Grand Prix will become one of the most accessible races on the F1 calendar, with the circuit just a short commute away by Metro, train, and city lines.

Indeed, it is estimated that 90% of fans will be able to travel to the paddock via public transport, while those staying in local accommodation will be a short walk away from the venue.

F1 is committed to reaching Net Zero Carbon by 2030 and IFEMA MADRID shares the vision to make the Spanish Grand Prix one of the most sustainable F1 events of the season, having greatly reduced its carbon emissions over the last five years and moved to 100% certified renewable energy across all exhibition halls, while any temporary structure built for the race will be constructed using recyclable materials.

IFEMA MADRID’s comprehensive proposal received widespread support from national, regional, and local government, including key stakeholders such as the Regional Government of Madrid, the Madrid City Council, and the Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to the Grand Prix, fan activations will take place in Downtown Madrid. There will also be engagement with local businesses and schools to ensure the whole community benefits from the event, which is expected to generate a projected €450m to the city’s economy per year.

“Madrid is an incredible city with amazing sporting and cultural heritage, and today’s announcement begins an exciting new chapter for F1 in Spain,” said Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1.

“I would like to thank the team at IFEMA MADRID, the Regional Government of Madrid and the city’s Mayor for putting together a fantastic proposal. It truly epitomises Formula 1’s vision to create a multi-day spectacle of sport and entertainment that delivers maximum value for fans and embraces innovation and sustainability.”

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, stated: “Modern Formula 1 cars racing on a new circuit in the Spanish capital city of Madrid is an enticing prospect.

“As we build towards the introduction of the FIA 2026 Formula One regulations, which have been framed with Net Zero carbon by 2030 in mind, it is pleasing to see that the local organisers have placed a sharp focus on environmental sustainability in their plans for the event.

“As is customary, the proposed circuit will be subject to FIA homologation and safety checks and calendar approval by the World Motor Sport Council.”

“Our dream of hosting a major F1 event around IFEMA MADRID has come true,” said Jose Vicente de los Mozos, President of the Executive Committee of IFEMA MADRID. “We are thrilled to announce the return of F1 to Madrid after more than four decades.

“We have the ambition to organise a Grand Prix that will become a reference in the F1 worldwide calendar, specifically conceptualized and designed to offer a distinctive and unique experience for both fans and teams participating in the competition.

“With this, Madrid wants to deep dive into the development of a new concept that combines sport and entertainment, while delivering a memorable event.”

Isabel Diaz Ayuso, President of the Region of Madrid, commented: “It is with great satisfaction that we announce Formula 1 is coming to the Community of Madrid, to a region and a capital that inspires openness and confidence within and beyond our borders. We are the main engine of Spain’s prosperity and progress.

“This event, which we expect to be followed on a global scale by 70 million people, will represent an increase of more than 450 million euros in Madrid's GDP per year and the creation of 8,200 jobs.

“The Community of Madrid is a region with a great international projection, open, plural, and competitive, and F1 will contribute to further consolidate the Madrid brand among the best in the world.”

Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, Mayor of Madrid, added: “With the announcement of the Grand Prix, Madrid moves into the future and joins the exclusive group of cities hosting F1 today, placing us at the forefront of the world’s capitals in attracting major events.

“We know that F1 is more than a race, it is an unprecedented opportunity to drive the transformation that Madrid is undergoing, and to show the world what we are capable of.

“I am confident that Madrid will be up to the task, not only because we deserve a spectacle of the magnitude of F1, but also because F1 deserves a city with the energy, character, and passion of Madrid.”

It's got a lot of those crap right-angle corners that seem common on the newer street circuits. Rubbish.

To be fair I don't love Catalunya, but more of these street circuits isn't good for the overall make-up of the calendar in my view.

The new team name for what was AlphaTauri has been confirmed ahead of the new F1 season.

Red Bull's sister team had only rebranded from Toro Rosso before the 2020 campaign but as the outfit welcomes the dawn of a new era following Team Principal Franz Tost's retirement - replaced by Laurent Mekies and new CEO Peter Bayer - a new name has also been revealed.

After months of rumours, Red Bull has now confirmed a global partnership with Visa to incorporate the company's logo on both its and the sister team's cars.

The new team name for AlphaTauri, as expected after a social media handle change late last week, has been revealed as Visa Cash App RB - a result of Visa's first major sport sponsorship in over 15 years.

"This is a groundbreaking partnership and a great opportunity for the Visa brand to engage one of the fastest-growing sports communities on the planet," said Visa Chief Marketing Officer, Frank Cooper III.

"This alliance resonates strongly with Visa’s vision to inspire individuals to ‘make it,’ striving to take small steps for improvement each day, during every race or event."

Bayer added: “It’s fantastic to reveal the new identity and to welcome new partners as we embark on the next phase of the team’s Formula 1 story.

"Faenza is entering a new era of racing, staying true to our roots as a hothouse for talent but now with an even greater focus on competing for the biggest prizes in F1.

"We have a bold vision for the team led by myself and Team Principal, Laurent Mekies and having future-focused partners such as Visa and Cash App alongside us on that journey is hugely exciting."

The new name announcement also revealed a launch date for the 2024 season, during which Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo will be presented in the new team colours for the first time.

Visa Cash App RB will hold its launch in Las Vegas on February 8, where the world will get to see the new livery, team colours and outfits for the first time.

Crucially, the team's affiliated F1 Academy journey will be launched at the same event, championing its selected driver and livery alongside the F1 team during the extravaganza.

"We’re thrilled to embark on this journey with Visa and Red Bull," said Cash App Head of Brand Catherine Ferdon.

"The Visa Cash App RB team and Cash App are dedicated to connecting people and communities, and there’s no greater unifier than sports.

"With the continued growth of Formula 1 in the US, this sponsorship allows us to deepen our relationship with Formula 1 fans and furthers Cash App’s commitment to supporting and growing the culture of F1 fandom in the United States while offering more value to our customers.

"We have a history of elevating emerging talent and look forward to sponsoring a team known for developing incredible up-and-coming drivers."

Red Bull Technology CMO Oliver Hughes added: "The birth of Visa Cash App RB is a hugely significant moment.

"The new identity is not simply a name change, it’s the start of a thrilling new journey designed to take the team to new levels of competitiveness and that’s demonstrated in the presence of one of the world’s most iconic brands as the team’s title partner.

"But, like the team, Visa is firmly focused on the future, expanding from its world-leading position in its core business to become a global pacesetter in the development of digital financial services for everyone, everywhere.

"Matching that commitment to future finance, Cash App joins the team as a key partner and as one of the most downloaded finance apps.

"The team’s new identity as Visa Cash App RB leans into a future in which the team charges towards the front of the grid every weekend."

Turrible.

Fast forward to whatever reason they can come up with to deny them entry in 2028.

"Hmm, in the team name, is that Andretti, with an "i", or Andrett1, with a "1"?"

"We have no way of knowing, so we simply can't allow them to enter. A confusing team name would have a negative impact to the F1 brand."
