TV pundit and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has said he will sponsor non-league side Marine for their FA Cup game against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Marine lost their sponsorship for the third round tie when an advertiser pulled out.

Carragher agreed to step in and sponsor the dugout and the warm-up tops through his JC23 Foundation.

"We are indebted to Jamie and the JC23 Foundation," chairman Paul Leary said in a statement.

"The JC23 Foundation do magnificent work in helping young people not just in Liverpool but right across the world. We are proud to partner with them on this special occasion."

Carragher's charity focuses on supporting sick, disabled and disadvantaged children and also provides services to community organisations and young people.

As the tie is behind closed doors, the club are also holding a raffle to try and raise funds.

Wayne Rooney and Derby’s entire first-team squad will miss the FA Cup tie at Chorley on Saturday following the coronavirus outbreak which has closed their training ground.

It is understood Derby will field a team of under-23 and under-18 players. FA Cup rules state that clubs are expected to fulfil their fixtures if they have 14 eligible players available – including from the under-23 and under-18 squads – though there is scope for appeal.

A number of first-team players and staff returned positive tests for Covid-19 on Monday, with the club’s training facilities subsequently closed. The fixture at Victory Park has been selected for live TV coverage and is scheduled to kick-off at 12.15pm GMT.

Derby’s academy director, Darren Wassall, is expected to take charge and may be without several members of the under-23 squad who have trained with the first team in recent days.

The development increases the chances of the National League North side causing an upset but their manager, Jamie Vermiglio, had hoped Rooney and the first-team squad would be there.

“From a personal point of view, and the players and the fans, we want to see Wayne Rooney walk into Victory Park,” Vermiglio said before the news was confirmed. “We want to be able to shake his hand, or fist pump or elbow bump.

“Even though it would disadvantage us if he were here, it would give the occasion a little bit more merit. The last thing we want is to be playing against an under-18 side. It’s our chance to shine against good players.”

Meanwhile, Shrewsbury have confirmed several players and staff members have tested positive for Covid-19. The League One side are due to travel to Southampton in the FA Cup on Saturday. “In accordance with EFL and government guidelines, all concerned individuals will now enter into a period of self-isolation,” read a club statement.

Mark your possible cupset cards accordingly, folks...

That's shit for Chorley. It's already going to be devoid of fans and now they can't even test themselves against Rooney and co.

Getting the prize money for winning against a youth team would probably make up for it somewhat, mind.

Word is that the more promising U23s have been training in the 1st team bubble because Villa has a fairly small squad.
So I reckon we’re most likely going to see an U18s side. Played them in that cup where youth teams play L1 and L2 teams, and Sunderland battered them, so I don’t anticipate it being pretty.

Klopp will still play Milner for 90 mins though.

You forget Klopp hates the FA Cup.

We'll play a younger team than Villa with the two tea ladies as the senior players at the back

And then complain at not having enough subs! :D

If anything, Klopp's top hates are:

  • The wind in England
  • The League Cup
    • Particularly the fact the semis are two legged
  • The FA Cup

I hope Shaqiri gets to play against Villa's kids.  He might have a chance at not being the shortest player on the pitch for once.

More 1st team players in the Liverpool side than we fielded in the 5-0 last year. Considering how much Klopp likes to cry about fatigue, that’s a surprising one. Strong vibes of Michael Owen scoring goals against an 11-year-old about this one.
