AEW: Fight Forever

Recommended Posts

It's been pretty fun, only played it a handful of times with a friend but it's definitely a fun play in that respect. I haven't touched Road to Elite yet but I might give that a look for a few before Dynamite and see how that plays.

Seeing lots of this already, on day one of early release.  Not good but also not terribly surprising.

Everything I've seen and heard the past month points to this being more of a party game/online game, especially if Stadium Stampede ends up being as chaotic/fun as it can be and not filled with people cheesing.

But for those without friends who can play or who are averse to playing online, this is just something that would be tough to justify full price.  Always possible new modes, creation options, and a host of other things that would naturally extend the 1P experience for a wrestling game get rolled out eventually, but I can't blame anyone for taking the wait and see approach.  Especially in a world where certain gaming companies (looking at you, EA Sports) openly don't give a shit about offline players.

Damn, that's definitely me. Was looking forward to a game where I can just let out some steam and beat people up, watch them bleed. Guess I'll have to stick to Sleeping Dogs on my Steam Deck :(

I played it in a couple of blocks yesterday. First time I was a little overwhelmed by the reversal system - it works fine, but there's actually zero tutorial on the timing for it, or any indicators. You just have to keep trying until you get it.

In the second session if play I had, a few hours later, I was a little more 'on it' with the terms of the pace of the matches and how the opponent's work. Even on 'Normal' you're going to lose some games with how it's built. However, I had a lot more fun in that second session once I got to grips more with the controls and the pace.

Already had a 4.5 star match, as Abadon vs Yuka Sakazaki. Wasn't expecting that!

For me, it's probably a 6/10 game at full price. It's definitely worth buying once it drops from full price, or if they flesh it out a little more. For example, there's no trios matches, which seems a bit of an oversight. The roster size is ok, you're getting 50+ to start off with, but hopefully that will be fleshed out over time with regular updates.

Basically, if you're a bit of a superfan that has the spare money to drop full price amounts on a slightly threadbare - but fun - game, then go for it. Otherwise wait for a price drop and/or additional content / features. I'm happy paying for it as I get the feeling we're gonna need as many purchases as possible to ensure interest in the game continues long enough for them to have the opportunity to buil it out.

hows the caw?

very bare bones, with some weird choices. Not many options, no layering, and weird stuff like being able to put a shirt on a wrestler in their entrance gear but not wrestling gear, and not being able to wear a jacket and shirt in entrance gear.

The ring announcer names give you a ton of real wrestler names to choose from, and you couldn't possibly make any of them with the tools available.

you can make a pretty spot on Kota Ibushi!

But that’s about it.

The CAW is probably the most unfinished thing in the game. It's extremely limited.

I think they probably built the CAW with the idea that you'd only create 1 or 2 to run through the story with.

Although it's slightly odd that there call names to create loads of actual wrestlers, and music for people like Maki Itoh (her actual theme) when there's no way you could create anything resembling them.

Things like Itoh's theme and a Sydal tag entrance make me wonder how much was left out because the game was released too early or because they're planning on selling them to people.

Interestingly some of the wrestlers have random gold alternative attires for no apparent reason. Who knows. I assume its another unfinished concept.

I think you might be the only person that will say that AEW focused on the graphics too much here.

:PThat's my point though - it seems like the graphics were half-assed; like instead of trying to be 2K lite graphics, lean into the arcadey/video gamey feel

Ran through Road to the Elite and it was naff. No sign of the world title. A years worth is actually about 16 shows. Stories are uninspired and if you do win a title the next show it's forgotten about.

Just a completely underdeveloped game .

The only title I got on my first play of RTE with Punk was the tag titles. It’s pretty obviously at random, you aren’t going to encounter every title through one playthrough. One time might be the tag + random stories, another might be TNT, etc. Pretty sure you get the World title story if you win the Casino Battle Royale at the beginning. I do wish every playthrough of the career mode didn’t start the same way though.

But I get it. It sucks, but I get it. That mode is meant to level up CAWs. It’s basically useless to take an existing wrestler through it. The working out activity doesn’t do anything since stats can’t be changed for anyone other than CAWs, and you can’t change skills or anything for any real wrestler in the game through that mode.

It’s very much a throwback to No Mercy. The game not telling you how to do stuff and you just learning it, the limited CAW mode with a huge variety for the movesets, even RTE with how simple and undercooked it is. They should have at least, for RTE, made it like No Mercy where you choose a title to go after. I’m not defending those choices, and they could still have those but greatly improve on it, but they didn’t. Not yet, anyway.

”Not yet anyway” kind of describes this game. I like it, don’t regret my purchase, but I kind of knew what I was getting into because I’ve been watching the leaks for the last week. “Not yet anyway” is a lot of games these days, too. With patches and adding more content post-launch, it could be great (IMO). For me, right now, it’s just fun, or “good”. Which is fine.

The whole idea of not yet anyway is one of my least favorite ideas of modern gaming. Of course I like that games can be fixed later, which if this were the N64 Era that couldn't happen, but I feel as if we some times use that to let a subpar product get a pass. If a game like God Of War or Even WWE 2k came out and sucked nobody would be letting them slide.

I actually do like the entrances being short, but seeing so many already do multiple playthroughs of the story mode makes me feel as if there's just not enough meat on the bone for me at least to justify the purchase. It's a bummer because there is market for more wrestling games. I think what we all actually want is a call back to All Stars not No Mercy.

I had a blast on my first run through of RTE with Cash Wheeler. I would have liked to have seen what happens in your career carry over from story to story in some form, but it was entertaining and I had a great time padding my record right up to Double or Nothing, where I proceeded to get spanked by the Young Bucks in a 2 on 1 match.

I took a look at the CAW feature and if they want people using that (and in turn, more people buying the game) they're really going to need to add to it.

Though, my biggest disappointment was that they hyped that we could edit the attires of existing wrestlers.... which implies a No Mercy-esque way to color-swap their existing gear or put them in something else entirely. Nope. I can add a t-shirt.

Tristy's more or less hit the nail on the head. It's a fun game, and the building blocks are there. My advice to people on the fence would be to either take a leap of faith in the team at THQ Nordiq, Kenny and Uncle Tony and pick it up within the first couple of weeks to really show them that continued development and investment is worthwhile... or hope that they're all-in on this venture and wait for a sale price.

Obviously, even with the lip service we've been given, there is no guarantee that any post-launch additions are anything more than just mini-games and new wrestlers to use... but given the people behind the game and what's been said by so many people involved in relation to future content, I'm more than happy that I took that leap of faith.

I'm going to get $80 worth of enjoyment out of this, for sure. It would be even better if it turns into something like MLB The Show for me, where I can play the game consistently for two to three years, pour the hours into it, and stretch that $80 as far as it will go.

I feel like something that has been described as a Omega passion project should have had a bit more "oomph" if you will when it was released. All this talk about how much love was being put into this game and then to get a product like this is....I'm not even sure what word I'm looking for here but it's just not good.
