AEW: Fight Forever

Recommended Posts

even if he weren't in as a playable character, there's little gameplay prompts and hints voiced over by Regal, which stand out like a sore thumb now he's gone. Obviously Yukes can't have known what was going to happen with him, but if they'd had more of a "video game" head on than a "wrestling" head for that bit, Evil Uno would be a great fit for the guy to talk you through tutorials.

Likely a lot of the "late additions" probably played a role in the game being delayed so much. "Oh we have to get Danielson & Cole in. Oh we have to get Malakai in. Oh we have to get Jeff Hardy in." Wouldn't be surprised if those were little added values to contract negotiations as well, "sign with us, we'll get you in the game for some extra royalties you were used to in WWE" maybe?

I'm sure there are a lot of moving parts and why things worked out the way they did, but as long as the game continues to be supported and they don't turn around and say "jk, AEW: ALL IN releases in 2024 with an all new updated roster!" I'm inclined to give them a little more grace with this being an entirely new game built from scratch in 2023 for a four-year old company and not a 25 year old skeleton that a bajillion dollar company like 2K puts out annually for another bajillion dollar company like WWE. Yukes has always been a small developer and THQ has obviously shrunk significantly since the days they were publishing WWE titles.

No company is your friend and all need to earn your purchase, but provided this game isn't a complete disaster, it's something I very much want to support with my dollars in hopes that it can grow and become a true alternative.

I feel like I'm not going to truly, 100% believe that Uno is not in the game until it comes out and people have tried whatever means of unlocking hidden characters may have been in those old games. Just doesn't make sense to me on any level, which doesn't mean that isn't what they actually did.

Maybe it's because it's a first game, and maybe it's because of the company involved, but it really feels like this is getting a lot of leeway that wouldn't be granted to a WWE game in the corners of the internet I frequent.

I mean, that's specifically why I'm giving it leeway on graphics and features, yes. The big complaint with WWE games as I recall is that for years they basically started feeling like a slight coat of paint thrown on the same game that was working a little less well each year until they righted the ship. If this game is fun to play, looks fine, and isn't clearly broken (a seemingly hard bar for AAA games to clear these days) then I think it's done its job and then the question is just "how long does the life cycle for this game actually last and when do they start putting thought into the next one where hopefully those things will be the focus?"

Since we're on a new page here's a refreshed roster after yesterday's news dump showed a bunch of new people on the character select screen, start up menu, etc.  We're up to 46 for the base game itself.

Spoiler

Base Game

-Abadon
-Adam Cole
-Adam Page
-Andrade El Idolo
-Aubrey Edwards (Unlockable)
-Brian Cage
-Britt Baker
-Brodie Lee (Unlockable)
-Bryan Danielson
-Christian Cage
-Chuck Taylor
-CM Punk
-Cody Rhodes
-Darby Allin
-Dustin Rhodes
-Eddie Kingston
-Hikaru Shida
-Jade Cargill
-Jeff Hardy
-John Silver
-Jon Moxley
-Jungle Boy
-Kenny Omega
-Kris Statlander
-Lance Archer
-Luchasaurus
-Malakai Black
-Matt Jackson
-Miro
-Nick Jackson
-Nyla Rose
-Orange Cassidy
-Owen Hart (Unlockable)
-PAC
-Paul Wight (Unlockable)
-Pentagon Jr.
-Rey Fenix
-Ricky Starks
-Riho
-Ruby Soho
-Sammy Guevara
-Scorpio Sky
-Sting
-Thunder Rosa
-Wardlow
-Yuka Sakazaki

Pre-Order/DLC
-The Bunny
-Cash Wheeler
-Danhausen
-Dax Harwood
-Hook
-Keith Lee
-Matt Hardy (Broken)
-Matt Hardy (Regular)

I'd guess we've got at least a few more base game characters to get them to the 50 for that achievement.  The character select screen showed everyone between Chuck Taylor to Matt Jackson and while there might be some unlockables between those names we don't know of yet, figure the remaining roster are alphabetically outside of those guys.

Arn Anderson, Taz, and William Regal all very much feel like they could still be in as playable legends.  Especially Regal since they already bothered to put him in for the tutorials.  Alex Reynolds, Brandi Rhodes, Christopher Daniels, QT Marshall, Powerhouse Hobbs, and Trent (the one lock in this group) could all be possibilities amongst others.

No Uno still puzzles the hell out of me and I'd love for it to be some kind of rib on him where he inexplicably gets added in last second as a surprise.  They did him dirty.

Is the Bunny a wrestler in a bunny suit or that rapper guy? Or both? Or neither?

I mean...she wears bunny ears. I don't know if you watched any TNA when Allie was there....and then her feud with Rosemary turned her into The Bunny which she brought with her to AEW.

Butcher, Blade, and Bunny are the most underrated act in AEW for my money. They're hired mercenaries, she's just an outright sociopath. They should be doing more with them!

Uno is playing up him not being in the game on Twitter. Whatever is going on with the game, his involvement with it, etc - I'm almost sure has to be something he knows about or is involved in.

OK, I didn't notice that one of the two mini-games that comes with the FTR pack is called "JoinUs"

Could be a Silver (and Reynolds?) based game as they're the Dark Order's Recruitment Specialists and all that...but I mean, surely that would be a logical place to wedge Uno in somehow?  I know some people are mixed on the idea of mini-games but if you throw bonus unlockable characters in them, especially the DLC mini-games, I think that would give people some real incentive to try out modes they might've otherwise skipped.

To hell with FTR, I'd buy that pack just to try to unlock Uno. :D

Pre-ordered. $116.something AUD for the Elite edition... Par for the course here for special edition games.
Now I wait.
Don't care about who's in it and who's not and why and why not. I play games for fun, not that stuff.

The more I watch of gameplay the more it looks like Yukes was instructed  to just build an updated No Mercy.  Which is a good thing, it’s definitely looking like the spiritual successor

IIRC I think it were the Bucks who early in production pretty much confirmed that they wanted the game to be in the vein of No Mercy, and it's looking bang on.

Also was 'timing the same button for a counter' a No Mercy thing, or is that more inspired by Fire Pro?

No Mercy was one shoulder counters strikes and one counters grapples. I hope they do similar.

The controller layout has shown that LB/L1 is grapple guarn and RB/R1 is strike guard, so assume that is the case.

I see that you can skip them but hopefully there's a way to turn those cut scenes off entirely. Outside of the novelty of seeing each new cities trademark dish, no one is going to be watching those.
