So installing a game to your harddrive makes the actual game DVD obsolete, right?

No, it still needs to be in the system for the game to start. Can't have you simply running off to rent a game and then be able to play it forever. Though if you play a lot of one game and it's installed, it just saves on the life of the DVD drive.
