A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault after a goalkeeper was attacked during a Championship football match.

Sheffield Wednesday's Chris Kirkland, 31, required treatment after being struck in the face during the game against Leeds United.

A man ran on to the pitch after Leeds had equalised in the game on Friday.

Gloucestershire Police said a man from Cheltenham had been arrested on suspicion of assault.

South Yorkshire Police, which is leading the investigation, said the suspect was being transported to South Yorkshire for questioning.

The Football Association is also investigating crowd trouble at the match and said it was awaiting the referee's report.

Managerless Bolton Wanderers have asked Crystal Palace for permission to speak to their manager Dougie Freedman, reports BBC Radio Manchester.

Freedman became Palace boss in January 2011, replacing George Burley.

He led Palace to the League Cup semi-finals last season and has steered them to fourth in the Championship this term - 12 places above Bolton.

Wanderers came from two down to beat Bristol City 3-2 on Saturday in their first game since Owen Coyle's sacking.

Academy boss Jimmy Phillips is in caretaker charge at the Reebok Stadium until Bolton find a new manager.

Freedman, 38, is in his first managerial role after a playing career for Barnet, Palace, Wolves, Nottingham Forest, Leeds and Southend.

The chanting lasted a few minutes, and was started because their fans started singing just a town full of Paedos (reference to Saville). Shouldn't be surprised that Jones never mentioned that, seeing as in every interview/report I've read the entire reason Leeds fans kicked off was because they started singing 'Always look out for Turks carrying knives'. I'm not justifying that idiot who went on the pitch and slapped Kirkland, but the reason it turned hostile (seats, bottles, coins, advertising boards being thrown) was because of their chanting. Of course we get the bad headlines for singing about Dave Jones, whereas their fans who were glorifying two murders don't get a mention. Our fans get bad headlines for throwing seats and bottles, whereas their fans who were throwing stones and bottles at our trams won't get a mention. I don't like giving the sob story, trying to make out everyone's anti Leeds etc but it seems that one prat who ran on the pitch instantly makes all the trouble the fault of Leeds fans when it wasn't. Whoever came up with the bright idea to play it on a Friday night must take some flack, same as moving Huddersfield/Leeds to a Friday night next month

Put it this way, Man United away to Chelsea next weekend. As much as I hate them Man U have a good passionate away support. If Chelsea fans start Munich chants during the game it will kick off.

What Jam said. Dave Jones can fuck right off, there was one thick cunt who shouldn't even have been in the stadium and apart from that all the trouble was caused by Sheff Wednesday fans singing about Turkey.

Still, it's really annoying that we spend years trying to get rid of the reputation and then some fucktard goes and does that on national TV, well done that guy. <_<

Punch a goalkeeper: 4 months. Interrupt a boat race: 6 months.

That makes no sense.
