UFC News and Discussion Thread

According to California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer George Dodd, Chael Sonnen has been notified that he failed post-fight drug screening following his loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 117, which was held Aug. 7 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif.

“[sonnen] received his notice yesterday,” Dodd told Sherdog.com shortly after the Shane Mosley-Sergio Mora boxing match ended Saturday night in Los Angeles.

In a conversation the day before, Dodd declined to comment on the situation, other than answering that all fighters from UFC 117 had passed drugs-of-abuse scans, but that the commission was still waiting on performance-enhancing drug screens from the event.

Dodd did not state which banned substance was red-flagged, but with a clean drugs-of-abuse scan it is clear the positive test was for a performance-enhancing substance.

The last major UFC banned-substance case in the state centered on UFC 73’s lightweight title match, which saw both competitors -- Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca -- test positive for PEDs. Both fighters were suspended for one year and fined, though Sherk appealed and had his suspension shortened to six months.

Sonnen is staring at a long layoff if he elects not to appeal or is denied. He was scheduled to rematch Silva Feb. 6 in Las Vegas, but that fight may be delayed or scrapped in light of these allegations.

Text messages to Sonnen went unreturned.

His manager Matt Lindland told Sherdog.com that he was cornering a fighter on the East Coast and had no knowledge of the positive test results.

Silva’s manager Ed Soares, who engaged in some heated exchanges via the media in the build up to the fight, was stunned when asked for his reaction.

“If it’s true, I feel really bad for him,” said Soares. “I know he did it to himself but it is really sad, he put on such a great performance that night. It is just a shame it will be tarnished.”

Powerhart demands instant results!

On a serious note this is disappointing as I wanted to see the rematch and whether he could have actually done it again and won the fight versus Anderson, but if this means Belfort vs Silva coming round faster I am all for it!

On a sidenote, Cro Cop suffered an eye injury in sparring but will be still able to fight next weekend against Mir.

He was 2-2 in his last 4 fights, come on UFC, accomplished Wrestler, TUF Winner, marketable full-blooded Mexican, he was great a prospect.

He was a great prospect who lacked heart and came into his last fight severely overweight.

Kid needs to get his shit straight and decide if he actually wants to be a fighter.

Escudero ain't that much of a loss considering how deep the Lightweight division is and he came in badly overweight in is last fight. He has potential but a few fights possibly in Strikeforce, Bellator, Shark Fights or something he'll be back in no time

Real shame about Sonnen, the rematch was going to be big. I'm excited about Belfort/Silva or Okami/Silva, but not on the level I was about Sonnen/Silva. It's a shame too because of how much momentum Chael had and how popular he was. He reasonably could have become one of the most popular fighters after his next fight with Anderson if he won, and breathed new life into the stagnant MW division.

This is such a mess at MW. Belfort/Silva is going to happen, I assume, at New Year's.

I won't go on a major rant, but Dana White should have a serious complaint with the people who tested Sonnen before the fight. If a guy comes in and says he'll probably test positive, don't you think you should relay that message to the UFC before the fight? Imagine if Sonnen wins, then it comes out he tested positive for PEDs. You'd have to vacate the title, damage a lot of the UFC's hard-earned credibility, and have to find a way to show that Sonnen never said that before the drug test.
