World Cup 2010 Thread

Yeah, might as well get Joe Hart in now and stick with him even if he has a few dodgy games...No-one else coming through who looks any good. Huddlestone has been pretty decent these last two seasons...Wilshere has skills. Rooney is only 24 but he hasn't performed for England in more than 2 years. You've got to worry when Peter Crouch has your best strike rate......and then is nowhere to be seen.

EDIT: Yeah Rodwell looks pretty decent actually.

English football fans are just like Cubs fans. The constant alternating between ridiculously high expectations when things are going well to the doom and gloom once the season/tournament is over is hilarious.

The majority of English football fans are perfectly realistic about our failings and where we are as a footballing nation, and are generally at odds with the media's 'this is the GOLDEN GENERATION~!' line.

To be honest, most normal fans thought we could beat Germany, but would have no chance against a team like Argentina, Brazil or Spain. So not the highest of high expectations. Most England fans didn't expect England to win the World Cup, but it's natural to get behind the team when they are there.

Much like Americans waiting in line for doughnuts.

Nah I agree with rockbox. We enter every tournament quietly optimistic and then the press try and whip everything up into a maelstrom and succeed as football is pretty much the English religion these days.

Harry Redknap is definitely a man I'd want in charge of England. He seems to know what he's on about. Honestly, I don't get it. Gerrard was so fucking far out of position that it was dragging Ashley Cole out of position that there was a massive gap which the Germans exploited.

Lampard's goal being disallowed was a travesty, and at 2-2, it'd have been a whole different game.

That doesn't excuse how shit we were.

On that note, Heskey on for Defoe? What? How the fuck was that going to help us in any way. The World Cup has been a huge disappointment. 3 goals in 4 games is bad.

This has been a pretty disastrous World Cup for the Man Utd players. Evra captained the most dysfunctional team there and went home without even a single win. Vidic went home early with his notable moment being a Superman-esque leap to handball it in his own area. Rio got injured before the tournament even started. Same with Nani. Carrick didn't make it past the bench. Rooney's goal-scoring form was restricted to knocking a few past James in training. Best performer was Park who did pretty well himself but was still knocked out at the round of 16. Hernandez is our last hope and he hasn't even played for us yet. Although, considering he's up against Argentina, he could very well be heading home tonight too.

Quite obvious what happened. We were outclassed by Germany from the word "GO" and that lead to us conceding a couple of goals that were both well-done from an offensive point of view and shameful from a defensive point of view. Then we scored from a set-piece which clearly shook up the young German side, allowing us to get another (even if it was disallowed). Early second half, the Germans recuperated and dominated us once again. No excuses, just out classed on every level.

What happens from here? Apparently people are called for Copello to be replaced. No. Just no. All the revolving door at the England Manager position is doing is hurting the team. Leave Fabio in place and let him try again for the Euros. What I would do (though, I'm not a manager) is start a-fresh. Next friendly, play a new squad without those that got first team places at this World Cup. Everyone else? Make them play for it. Start selecting the squad based on form, and to the likes of Rooney, let him know that if he doesn't score goals he isn't going be in the first squad. Simple as that.

EDIT: Also, minor note. The build-up of today's game consisted of the media saying "Rooney was on fire in training, scoring loads past James. This means he is going to score!" ... My immediate reaction was, "No, it means James is letting some in." To be fair to James, he wasn't dreadful in the first half. He saved a few shots that could have easily went in against ... erm ... Rob Green.
