This might be the biggest over-reaction decision at a Grand Prix since yesterday's red flag after Tsunoda scratched one of the barriers. When the race was supposed to start it wasn't even raining.

The FIA seem scared to make any kind of decision that might put themselves at risk, which is understandable after Abu Dhabi, but is very frustrating for everyone else.

Reason given is "there was no wet running all weekend so the teams and drivers were given more time to prepare".

So I assume if it rains during a race in the future they just red flag it so the drivers can go and do some sim work in wet conditions?

Speaking of red flags...

Heart in the mouth stuff seeing Mick’s car split in two and the directors immediately cutting away and now returning to the shot until he was climbing out.

Also, the new rice directors have been very, very poor so far. Makes no sense for them to bring on two race directors and choose two men with no F1 experience. At least one of them should have at least some experience in F1.

Imagine this sort of action taking place at a proper circuit. I'm pretty sure there have been no on-track overtakes since the race re-started.

I get the appeal of keeping Monaco on the calendar but times change and nothing lasts forever. After that race I’m not sure as a racing spectacle it has any legs for this generation of cars.

Sergio Perez has followed up his Monaco GP win with a new Red Bull contract, although it looks as if it may have been signed before Sunday’s race.

Re-signing with Red Bull last year for the 2022 championship, Perez made it known that he wants a long-term future with the Milton Keynes squad.

Perez has now been confirmed on a new two-year deal with Red Bull Racing, with the team releasing a short video on their social media channels confirming Perez until the end of 2024.

The deal was confirmed on Tuesday, the May announcement earlier this usual for Red Bull, but that was probably because Perez let the cat out of the bag on Sunday.

Congratulated by team boss Christian Horner after his Monaco GP win, he was caught on camera joking that he had “probably signed too early”, Horner chuckling at that.

Perez’s new contract sees Red Bull retain the same line up for a third year running, with the former Racing Point driver continuing alongside Max Verstappen.

Sunday’s result means Perez closed the gap to Verstappen to just 15 points in the Drivers’ Championship with Horner saying the Mexican driver is definitely in the title fight.

“He’s in this championship just as much as Max is. The difference between the two of them is 15 points now, it’s nothing, so it’s a long way to go in this championship,” he said on Sunday.

Perez’s latest contract has once again closed the Red Bull door for Pierre Gasly, the Frenchman most likely set to remain with AlphaTauri again as Helmut Marko has previously confirmed that he has a contract through to 2023.

Good on Checo for getting the bag, he's a really good fit for Red Bull at this point in his career and especially this year he's shown to be the perfect driver to pair with Max Verstappen. He's drama free, but he can get the maximum out of the car and that's going to be worth its weight in gold as Red Bull aims for the WCC along with another WDC.

But this pretty much should end Pierre Gasly's involvement with Red Bull after this season. He's stuck around in the hopes of finding his way back into the Red Bull seat, but with Checo on board through 2024, that leaves him completely dead in the water in terms of career choices.

The only issue is where he might go, the only drives I can see open up soon are Vettel's seat at Aston Martin and maybe Ricciardo's seat at McLaren. The first one would be a big time step back competitively even compared to Alpha Tauri, and the second one is nowhere near a guarantee that McLaren will move away from Ricciardo.

There's also a tiny chance that Lewis or Fernando might retire, but honestly I don't see either of them hanging up their boots this year or even next year.

Try not to be too surprised, but new FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem doesn't think the drivers should be doing/saying anything that might be conceived as representing a cause, or as he puts it, "imposing [their] beliefs".

Hilarious to use Niki Lauda as an example of someone who only cared about driving when he spent so much time lobbying for improved safety, threatening boycotts of events in Apartheid countries, and stopped racing for three years to run an airline. And by "hilarious", I mean "scarily ignorant".

The reason that Nico Rosberg has only been on Sky via satellite, with the exception of Monaco, is because he's banned from the F1 paddock due to not being vaccinated (Monaco was filmed outside of the paddock). He says his doctor has recommended him not getting the vaccine because his natural antibodies are just so darn strong.
