Tim Sherwood is basically the counterpoint to any "there are no black/female managers good enough for this level" argument.

On that note, apparently Dwight Yorke is a contender for the Villa job. Depends who else is available I guess, not sure he's the right fit in their situation but can't get much worse I suppose.

One of the problems I had with it was early in the second half, Mbemba does an arguably worse shoulder to shoulder shove outside the box to protect the ball as it runs out for a goal kick as it's not even questioned as a foul, so where is the consistency?

Per the Guardian...

Newcastle United have lodged an appeal with the Football Association in the hope that Fabricio Coloccini’s sending off at Sunderland on Sunday will be overturned.

Coloccini was shown a straight red card by the referee Robert Madley in first-half added time following an incident which saw Steve McClaren’s captain barge Steven Fletcher with a shoulder. It resulted in the awarding of a controversial penalty, converted by Adam Johnson and an even more contentious dismissal for Coloccini on the basis that as “the last man” he had denied Fletcher a clear goalscoring opportunity.

It is understood that quite apart from arguing that the goalkeeper, Rob Elliot, had the situation covered anyway, Newcastle will remind the FA of a passage in its own rule book.

The text they are expected to quote says: “A player who places himself between an opponent and the ball for tactical reasons has not committed an offence as long as the ball is kept within playing distance and the opponent. If the ball is within playing distance, the player may be fairly charged by an opponent.”

Madley, though, saw things differently, regarding Coloccini’s intervention as an unfair charge which denied Fletcher an obvious scoring chance. His decision left McClaren furious, with Newcastle’s manager suggesting the official was not sufficiently experienced to have taken such an important match.

As an intense debate about the incident raged, a game initially dominated by Newcastle changed beyond recognition, leaving Sunderland to emerge 3-0 winners and Coloccini facing a one game suspension. As things stand, that ban will see the centre-half sit out Saturday’s now vital meeting with Stoke City at St James’ Park.

The appeal will be heard by a regulatory commission on Tuesday afternoon and the club will be notified of the result shortly afterwards.

Arsenal have been fined £60,000 and warned over their future conduct after breaching the Football Association’s football agent regulations in relation to the transfer of Calum Chambers from Southampton.

Chambers moved to Arsenal in July 2014 for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £11m. Agent Alan Middleton was fined £30,000 and suspended for three months for his part in the same matter.

A statement from the FA read: “Arsenal have been fined £60,000 and warned as to their future conduct after breaching The FA’s Football Agent Regulations. The charge was in relation to the transfer of Calum Chambers from Southampton to Arsenal on July 26, 2014.

“Arsenal admitted part of the breach but denied another, which was found not proven following an Independent Regulatory Commission. The charges against Mr Middleton, which he denied, were found proven.”

The written reasons for the sanctions described the incident as a classic case of “fronting”, where an unauthorised and unlicensed agent was involved.

A statement from Arsenal read: “We acted in good faith throughout in this transfer and had no reason to believe that the player’s representative was not authorised to be involved in the transfer negotiations. The FA fully recognised that there was no intention to mislead on Arsenal’s part. We have improved our procedures to prevent this happening again.”

Middleton was warned to his future conduct, sanctioned for breaching regulations, fined £30,000 and “suspended from all agency/intermediary activity for a period of three months”.

However, the suspension is suspended for 18 months from 23 October 2015 “unless he commits an offence contrary to the agents regulations or The FA’s regulations on working with intermediaries during this time”, the FA said.

Responding to the outcome, Middleton, of Cassius Sports Management, said: “I am pleased that the FA commission found that the only case to answer was a minor procedural error which was a genuine oversight by ourselves and Arsenal Football Club.

“As a company we take our responsibilities extremely seriously and it was pleasing to see that the commission acknowledged that at all times we acted in the best interests of the player and cooperated fully with the commission’s investigation.

“Lessons have been learned and we have implemented measures going forward that would ensure such an error could not happen again.”

Manchester United have granted Wayne Rooney a testimonial following a campaign by supporters to honour the striker’s long service.

Rooney will play in a testimonial match for a Manchester United XI against yet-to-be-named opponents at Old Trafford on 3 August, 2016. Details of the players and managers who will be involved are expected to be revealed over the next few weeks.

The 30-year-old will donate all the profits from the match to the NSPCC, Alder Hey Childrens’ Hospital, Claire House Hospice and the Manchester United Foundation through the newly formed Wayne Rooney Foundation.

Rooney’s representatives said United awarded the striker the testimonial after a meeting between “like-minded individuals and Manchester United fans” who wrote to the executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, asking that a testimonial be awarded following the player’s 11-year spell at the club.

He'll probably slow the game down though.

There's rumblings around the Newcastle blogs and forums that Johnson's celebration (running 80 yards to the Newcastle fans making an aeroplance gesture) was a reference to the two fans who died on MH17.

I think they're reaching personally.

FA: we've made a horrible mistake. No ban for you.

NUFC:

FA: but how dare you point out that game changing mistake! Bad Newcastle!

NUFC: o_O

I'm always a bit confused when a failure to control your players is applied when the incorrect decision that caused it is overturned.

Gabriel getting his red card overturned and then getting banned for his reaction to Diego Costa's bellendery was worse mind.

That charge is puzzling in itself. IIRC the ref is 'surrounded' by Colo, Colback and Elliot, none of which are being aggressive. Mbemba is sort of standing off to the side, minding his own business and stopping Mitro from headbutting the ref.

Considering we regularly see 5-6 players screaming in the ref's face because he's given the opposition a throw in, it seems a bit inconsistent.
