Guardian have posted an article about how the government apparently encouraged the Prem to approve the Saudi takeover.

Managers actually staying in the same job for more than three years is impressive these days, to be honest.

Apparently only 16% of managers in the top four divisions have lasted more than three years, and the same page makes a point to say that one of those was non-league for 11 of his 13 years at the club. In contrast, over half of them have been in the job for less than a year and more than a third only began their tenure in 2022.

Yeah and since he left Juve it's pretty typical of Conte to leave a job after 2 years.  I figure you can pretty much set your watch by him.

It is interesting and is clear evidence of some pretty systematic failings. Is it that the due diligence and hiring process in football management is fucked up so they higher people that aren't fit for the job? Or is it that the hire is fit for the job but the club or the fans have unrealistic expectations? Or is it because the whole circus of hiring and firing managers and the gossip about who goes where is central to football being an entertainment product?

Surely a lot has to do with the fear of relegation and the reward of promotion (or in the highest leagues European football). Worse to stick with a failing manager too long than take a chance with a managerial change.

There's also that the very good managers in the lower leagues don't stay with the clubs they made successful, and are rewarded with a more lucrative job at a richer club. While very bad managers with experience can, with ease, drift around second-rate jobs for a year or two.

Some managers, Conte being an example and Jose another, are very dictatorial in what they want and expect from a club. And because they historically win trophies it's very easy for them to leave for the next job at the drop of a hat.

Conte isn't happy unless he's winning at least one trophy a year, really, and even then, he wants to be winning the league every year. While also having as much control as possible over everything in the club, and getting a lot of money spent on transfers. Conte is simply a LOT to handle, and when he doesn't get his way, he throws tantrums and eventually leaves because he knows there will be a new club ready to spend on him to give him what he wants, at least for a year or so.

He's a very smart businessman and will use the threats of leaving to get the money he needs to be successful. While he pretty much always has to spend big money, he does get a lot of them right. Got them both right big time with Spurs. Lukaku, Hakimi, Barella at Inter. He's truly one of the best in the world.

I think a mind like Pep or Klopp can build these incredible clubs but require a lot of under-the-radar transfers for players that will fit a precise role, not to mention developing incumbent players around their new roles. If I needed to try and turn it all around in a single year Conte is my guy. He knows the exact players who fit his system and doesn't require a lot of time to build it up. He takes what he's given and knows exactly what else is needed - and very often hits on filling out his squad. As you said, truly one of the best in the word.
