2013 NFL Season Thread

It's just the Ravens home opener being postponed. It's not like they're being forced to play a "home" game in London. No one should have to play doubleheaders or lose off days in the midst of a pennant race unless weather intervenes.

Rain is actually a huge reason they don't like to move games around in advance. They aren't going to schedule a doubleheader unless there actually is rain. Teams don't like to play doubleheaders because of the competitive disadvantages. If September comes around and neither team is in the postseason hunt then they would likely schedule a doubleheader on Saturday so the NFL could play on Thursday, but they aren't going to this until both teams have nothing to play for. If they put the game on at 12 or 1 (the only time on Thursday they could possibly play the game), the games the day before both have to move to 1pm because of the league CBA. Those other teams also have to sign off on it and could have their own logistical problems. The White Sox only come to Baltimore once, so that takes away a lot of flexibility as is. An usher and I talked last year during a long rain delay in a KC-Baltimore game. The rain delay had been going on for a good 2 hours already and I asked him why they hadn't cancelled the game, and he said that KC had a travel day scheduled for Monday to get to the west coast and they didn't have any other trips to Baltimore left in the year. So they weren't going to give up their Monday travel day given they were headed cross country. They weren't going to use one of the rare matching off days both teams had the last month and a half of the year since teams don't like to travel to a city, play a game, and then travel to another city. It is an expense, extra, tiring travel, and could become a real scheduling conflict later in the season. Basically what I'm saying is it's really easy to think baseball can just move games around with ease but the opposite is the case, at least as long as teams are worried about giving themselves a competitive disadvantage by rescheduling. Hell, some teams don't even make up games late in the season unless they have to.

This comes down to the NFL being selfish and greedy. Play on Wednesday, stop throwing religion and baseball under the bus.

And the celebration doesn't mean that much to me as a Ravens fan. Thursday night football sucks anyway, Baltimore is not a city that really can handle any weekday NFL game because of its layout. Monday games really, really suck when they have those. People who go to the games tell me it takes forever to get to the stadium because of how bad traffic is with people leaving work. The whole Thursday night opener is kind of overblown, a lot of the championship team (especially this year's Ravens) is sometimes playing in different cities, and the fans already had the parade and big celebration right after the Super Bowl itself. The first game of the year doesn't need to be when the team distributes the rings, "raises the banner", or what have you. That's not the case in baseball, basketball, or hockey and despite that it is still a special game when it happens for the team and the fans. Thursday doesn't add anything special to it in my eyes, and I don't think they need the league champion to open the season.

Why does Thursday bring bigger ratings than Wednesday in the US? They're the same thing to me.

In general, Thursday has always been a night where shows produced heavy ratings in the States. Think Must See TV on NBC. I'm not exactly sure if it's because of the emphasis networks placed on winning Thursdays or another factor, but it's been that way for at least 20 years.

Kind of mixed on Dumervil joining the Ravens. On one hand there is a place for him to slot into perfectly on the defense. Pairing he and Suggs together is really, really awesome. He's not getting any younger, but he's of the age where at least for most of the contract the team he should be worth the money they're paying him. There are a lot of positives, and it allows them to avoid drafting this position in the draft and focusing on other positions. However, I was of the mindset that I would have rather the Ravens spent Dumervil's money on 3 or 4 veterans to add depth and see if one of them can have a career year. The Corey Graham and Jacoby Jones signings last year worked out spectacularly. I understand the value in proven players, but it's not like the team is lacking Pro Bowl talent. They did have the cap space to spend on adding another Pro Bowler, and as always if it fizzles out they can cut him, but at the end of the day I'm worried about the team not having veteran depth and sending out rookies too early into their careers on defense.

And for whatever reasons Monday and Thursday are the best days for TV ratings. Research has yielded information that Thursday is the biggest night for TV viewership with Monday in second. As a result networks place the most emphasis on those two nights (especially Thursday) by putting their best shows in primetime slots then. A consequence of this is that advertising money is more on Thursday than on Wednesday. 30 second blocks yield more money. That's just how it is, for whatever reason.

Also, in spoilers is my draft. I didn't do too well as a drafter, but I think I got good players.

Might try and go with not picking Swope, Dropping Bostic to the 4th Round and picking up a Center with my second or third round pick.

As for picking Williams in the first.... Part Patriotism, Part building Defence of Doom.

Guess I didn't need to reach for Landry Jones when Nassib just fell into my lap in the 3rd round.

I gave it a go as the Chiefs so I could have the top pick. I was expecting offers from teams so I could trade down, but none came through. I added a whole lot of depth in the later rounds, a bit unrealistic but I had fun adding basically a completely new defense.
