Tom Brady just signed a 3-year extension (he was already signed for 2 more years) with the New England Patriots that saves them $15 million in cap room over the next 2 years and nearly guarantees (outside of a trade or other shenanigans) he will be retiring with the Patriots. The amount saved for the 2013 season is the exact same amount Wes Welker's rumored deal is that was reported earlier today (which is for 5 years), leading some to speculate that Brady made the deal so that Welker would get his money without it adding 1 cent to the cap hit.

Here is how the deal is structured...

2013: $13.8 million
2014: $14.8 million
2015: $13 million
2016: $14 million
2017: $15 million

Pretty cool move by Brady here. I know he's filthy rich already and it likely won't make a difference to him but he's basically halving his earning potential for the good of the team, couldn't see a a guy like Brees doing this after his contract situation last year basically lost them Carl Nicks.

Yeah this is a good thing to do as a teammate and one that helps the Pats keep Welker, but it does mess with the other players who just saw their pay scale drop a little bit.

And to stop any speculation before it starts, no this won't affect the Flacco negotiations at all they aren't going to pay him any less as a result of a veteran in the final few years of his career whose wife is wealthier than he is taking a bit of a paycut. Flacco is in the position of Brees last year where he is getting his cash-in contract. In football you might have your career end tomorrow so you need to get as much as you can as soon as you can so he's going to take as much as he can and worry about saving money once enough is set aside to live the life he wants to and retire on his football earnings, something too many players struggle with.

From what i've seen of Flacco, he's far more likely to throw his money away and hope Jacoby Jones runs it 60 yards in for him :shifty:

So, Tom Brady will actually be making more money with this extension, but, because it clears some cap space immediately there's that perception of "The Patriot Way," and all the other BS that's followed TB throughout his career. Exactly the reason why guys like Peter King are always so quick to get on their knees for Tom before the details come out.

They're going to rip the contract up in two years, before the "3-year, $27 million" extension even starts, but the perception is that Brady's willing to do anything for his team, even accept well-below market value, even though that's not the case at all. I hate the Patriots.

The "Patriot Way" is the biggest fraud in sports. Asante was right to leave NE, and Welker would be wise to cash in with a big signing bonus, too.

Detroit suck and aren't in the healthiest shape cap-wise, especially considering Avril is a free agent and Stafford will be up for an extension soon. If Green Bay are any way interested he'd be there in a heart beat.

I don't even understand how some of the combine drills translate to NFL skills. The long jump? Really?
