It's a welcome change that'll raise the stakes some. I kinda wish they'd ditch the PAT altogether, making TDs worth 7 unless you opt for the double or nothing 2 pt conversion.

It kinda eliminates fake FG PATs now though. Not a major loss by any means but that's something that will never be done again.

Because if you opt for 2 and fail you only get 6. It's double or nothing.

There are a lot of analytic types who have shown that you should always go for 2 anyway. Basically you'll make around 50% of them so if you score 4 TDs a game and get two 2 point conversions it's the same as 4 PATs. But if you manage to beat the odds and get 3 you get an extra point that you wouldn't have had otherwise.

Making it more high stakes can potentially negate some of that inherent advantage. But of course making PATs a lower percentage of success means you'd be wise to still always go for 2.

Shame Ed Reed had to retire before this rule change.
