NBA 2016-2017 Season

So the Magic are a bit shit aren't they. Like, if they'd played a good team when I went to see them, I'd possibly be able to justify supporting that team instead. But no, they had to play the Nets, and win, which gave me an unrealistic expectation of how good they were. Fuck sakes.

Jodie Meeks is fucking trash. Biyombo has been a disappointment, and honestly, Vucevic is performing better than him. I don't really understand the ins and outs of trading and such, but would the Magic be able to get anything good out of trading away Biyombo? Hypothetically, because I doubt it'll happen (or even if it can at this point in the season).

Serge Ibaka has been pretty good though. And I still miss Victor Oladipo :(

@Quom

Uh, so the Pistons and Wolves are talking about trading Reggie Jackson for Ricky Rubio and Shabazz Mohammed. I don't understand this trade to be honest, as Reggie is now just getting his shit together and playing well. Unless we're trying to clear cap, or think that Reggie is just a cancer in the locker room?

I can see Stan liking Rubio. He's a real system guy. I know Pop was interested in him for years as well. He's the perfect guy for someone that wants to be able to tell their PG we want A,B,C to happen every trip up the floor. Plus he has a wide skill set, you want half court P&R? Rubio is your man, he got Pek a massive contract since he always found him on the roll, you put him with a Drummond or DeAndre Jordan and they'll wreck people. You want a fast pace? He's second in the league to Love for outlet passing with the added bonus that he's smart enough not to throw it if it isn't advantageous and since the ball is already in his hands will sprint dribble up the court anyway creating a mini fastbreak. I want to see Rubio in the playoffs, besides the not being able to shoot stuff he's actually everything I'd want in a PG. Plus that shits overblown, he was 7th in the league from mid-range the last I heard, he keeps hitting those and teams will start covering him. Strangely Pop apparently also has a fascination with Shabazz, I think it's because he's kind of a weird arse player. SG sized but bangs the boards super hard and only has one move but can light teams up for 20+ if they don't deny him the low post. He's a total black hole though.

As for the Timberwolves, in all honesty Thibs isn't a great coach from what I've seen out of him and can't seem to work out what the problems are and how to fix them. I think he's going to try and run a motion offence, not getting that you need willing passers to make that happen. It isn't Rubio bottle necking things with his inability to shoot, it's the fact that if you iso Wiggins or Towns they're going to turn into the double team rather than kicking it out to swing to the open man. KAT, Wiggins and sometimes LaVine are all godawful passers as well, it's always far enough away from where the shooter would like it that they have to readjust (and sometimes is just wildly inaccurate). Beyond which the rumour is he is after a disposable PG to replace with Dunn. Rubio and Dunn are fairly similar in that they're both defensive specialists that struggle to shoot. I can see Rubio being pissed if you benched him for Dunn, whereas Jackson you could justify with 'sure you scored 20 but you're getting eaten alive and aren't defending'. Plus unless he's a cancer he's a known commodity so I can't see his value fluctuating wildly, keep him for a year then trade him.

I kind of really want Rubio to go to the Jazz though, he was roommates with Ingles in Spain, he and Gobert would kill it. Plus they are super grindy which I think could actually suit him.

I concur on the love for Rubio. He might not be good (at all) when shooting the three, but he's a smart guy that knows how to get his. And like Quom said, he's the perfect guy to get others the ball where they need, he's the best true Point Guard in the league since Jason Kidd and in a system that doesn't rely on an ultra-skilled point with talented guy that can't iso he'll turn them into all-stars, and get Rajon Rondo big three numbers.

I'd love him at the Mavs because I like him as a player, but he wouldn't fit the pass-heavy motion offense in Dallas, so that's a real shame.

I don't know, every season Rubio is 100% being moved. If we're trying to win at least to me it doesn't make sense. Rubio can cause issues because the defence sags or will go under on screens. At the same time our offence is statistically always much better with him out there. People seem to forget the crisp passes leading to easy baskets and focus on Rubio passing it to KAT who spins into a double for a turnover.

I'd hope Thibs is smart enough to not trade for someone that has been a dick on two different teams, especially when our team is so young. Reggie Jackson might fit the shoot first PG style Thibs normally goes for, but it's not really worth it if the guy's a fuckwit.

Having said that, I do hope Rubio gets moved. I've had enough of the Timberwolves fan-base. I have no idea if these are bandwagon fans or old fans who saw people thought we'd be a playoff team and decided to pick them up again. But shit is brutal. Not just in a frustrated way, in a people constantly shitting on every player on the team and demanding a blood sacrifice every game. It has gotten old real fast.

The Jazz are owned by a legacy trust now.

Quote

This afternoon, Utah Jazz owner Gail Miller announced that ownership of the team would be restructured and the team would henceforth be owned by a legacy trust. Miller and her husband Larry paid a total of $26 million for the franchise in 1985, and they’ve doubtless had several offers to cash out for a hefty profit. Larry died in 2009, and if Gail and the rest of the Miller family wanted to sell, they stand to make a shitload of money.

However, there’s no guarantee that new ownership would be willing to keep the team in as unglamorous and small a town as Salt Lake City (or be as willing to pay for most arena costs), so that hypothetical sale would endanger the future of the NBA in Utah. Thankfully for Jazz fans, the Millers’ restructuring will probably keep the team in town for a very long time. Under the new arrangement, all profits are supposedly earmarked to be invested back into the team, rather than back to an owner.
