NFL 2022

I'd guess probably, if you have an exceptionally good kicker who puts points on the board that would probably feel like a bigger priority to keep than someone who helps you in the field position game.

But even still, kickers are viewed as kinda same-y with the rare exceptions like Tucker (incredibly accurate) or Carlson (very strong leg).

With the Bills correctly cutting Araiza, they've had a number of punters in camp but now might have other options as camp cuts commence, including 3-time Pro Bowler Brett Kern being cut by the Titans today in favor of an undrafted rookie.

Gotta suck being a specialist in the NFL.  Unless you're in a particularly loyal organization (looking at you, Ravens)...no matter how good you are, you're probably always gonna lose your job to someone cheaper.

Ravens have been remarkably loyal in our history. We've had 5 total kickers... And if you subtract the 3 years between Stover's retirement and Tucker being drafted where we had 3 different kickers, we've only had 2 since 1996.

I believe we're now on our 5th punter in franchise history as well. Unless I'm forgetting someone from the very early years.

It's been a constant and the team has basically always had a top special teams unit, one particularly awful FG attempt notwithstanding...

Nobody wanted him so I guess they restructured to basically have it so he'd have a cap hit close to whatever the dead money would've been? Not sure on the details there.

No dead money would have been $1M or so. This is obviously to get some relief on the cap # and make it more palatable for a team to trade for him between now and the deadline. Basically just they don't have to just cut him for nothing and can wait to see how things shake out.

There's a no trade clause in there and I believe a no tag clause, so he will be a Niner this year and definitely be a free agent in 2023 unless Lance just fails miserably.

He doesn't have to exercise the no trade clause. It's just there to assure him that he has a say in where he'd go.

It's possible he stays on the team but the lower cap number makes it way more likely a team would be interested in trading for him than the previous number.

Ah, interesting.. Should be a fun season with that looming.  Hopefully they can deal him quick then.

Journeyman linebacker Austin Calitro is from my hometown, alum of my high school, grew up a Giants fan and today it was announced that he'd survived cutdown day and made the Giants' preliminary 53-man roster.

The roster is very much in flux, I suspect there could be a handful of guys let go as waiver claims are processed.  No idea if he'll actually be on the team by Week 1 but either way it's a cool story for us locally as he was signed to seemingly just be a camp body a month ago and he forced his way onto the team with a strong camp.
