The Arizona Cardinals made history Monday, announcing the hiring Jen Welter of the Indoor Football League as the NFL's first woman to hold a coaching position.

A former collegiate rugby player who played 14 seasons of pro football -- mostly in the Women's Football Alliance -- Welter was brought in by Bruce Arians as a training camp/preseason intern coaching inside linebackers.

"Coaching is nothing more than teaching," Arians explained Monday, via the team's official website. "One thing I have learned from players is, 'How are you going to make me better? If you can make me better, I don't care if you're the Green Hornet, man, I'll listen.' I really believe she'll have a great opportunity with this internship through training camp to open some doors for her."

Welter played running back and special teams for the Indoor Football League's Texas Revolution in February of 2014, becoming the first female to play a non-kicking position in a men's professional football league.

In a text exchange with Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report, one AFC player acknowledged, "The truth is, she has more playing experience than some of the coaches who coach me now."

Welter went on to work under Revolution general manager and 2015 Hall of Fame inductee Tim Brown, becoming the first female to coach in a men's pro football league.

It's no surprise that Arians is the first head coach to grant Welter the opportunity to break the NFL's gender barrier.

While most professional football coaches learn a conservative approach, steering clear of controversial statements or maneuvers, Arians blazed his own unique path, finding success later in life.

"That's the way everyone's brought up in this business -- to be guarded, especially if it's not your last job," Arians told NFL Media columnist Michael Silver last year. "I don't have to (be guarded) anymore."

Arians hinted at the possibility of a female coach in April.

"The minute they can prove they can make a player better," Arians said at the NFL owners meetings, "they'll be hired."

He put that statement into practice on Monday, embracing the hot-button issue of women coaching men.

Just a year after being hired as the first full-time female coach in the history of major men's American sport, San Antonio Spurs assistant Becky Hammon led the team's Las Vegas Summer League squad to the 2015 title in mid-July.

If Hammon's hiring was initially viewed as a gimmick, that's no longer the case. Her immediate success has NBA insiders and observers wondering when she will be make history as the league's first female head coach.

"Since 2000, changes have been pretty damn rapid in a lot of ways," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich recently opined. "And I think people are fed up with injustice and with people not respecting other people's space and who they are. I think it's a step in the right direction."

Former Dolphins and 49ers offensive lineman Jonathan Martin is retiring from the league, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday, according to a source who has spoken to Martin. After being cut by the 49ers in March, Martin was claimed off waivers by the Panthers. However during the offseason, he suffered a back injury, Rapoport reports. Instead of undergoing surgery and potentially missing the 2015 season, Martin has chosen to retire.

Houston Texans team physician Dr. Walt Lowe recently raved that Jadeveon Clowney "looks spectacular" in his return from microfracture knee surgery. That doesn't mean the second-year pass rusher will ready to go when training camp opens, however. The Texans announced Monday that Clowney has been placed on the active/physically unable to perform list. This is a procedural move that will enable the team to keep Clowney on the PUP list for the first six weeks of the regular season if his knee doesn't cooperate. Clowney can be activated at any point during training camp. Barring a setback, we expect to see him on the practice field before the end of August.

I'm excited to see how much of a ninny/just how little Clowney cares on Hard Knocks. Even before he enrolled at South Carolina, he was constantly taking off plays and just seemed content to get by on his skill and not work hard at being better. Everyone remembers the hit he had on that Michigan running back that knocked his helmet off, but what most people that don't watch college football won't know is 50% of the time he was just going with the motions. He is such an athletic freak that if he had any heart or desire to be the best, he very well could be. But he's just happy to coast on his natural abilities, and I think unless someone smacks him in the head, he'll never be anything more than average.

Brady's 4 game suspension upheld,  Massholes cry, and this whole fucking shitshow keeps rolling on.  Take the fucking suspension and shut the fuck up about it.

Yay! I mean we're still going to get beaten but I was totally expecting them to reduce it to 2 games and Brady to come back and lay on like 100 points in week 3 against the Jags.

Well, I mean, its what everyone deserves for saying mean things about him.  So sick of America's most insecure person.

They had a terrible domestic violence policy (could say they do) but the punishments for that can't be compared to against the punishments for other things, or serious in game infractions would never merit real penalties.  I mean, tampering with the game ball during the AFC championship game should absolutely carry a harsh penalty, and it shouldn't be relative to how harsh a penalty for domestic abuse outside of the confines of the game is.  The problem is really that they don't just indefinitely suspend players who commit acts of domestic violence and the like, until any investigation and trial are wrapped up.

I'm truly stunned. I expected it to be reduced from 4 games down to 2, but not upheld. Brady's people were trying to get it thrown out completely, but NO WAY that would have happened. If it did, it would have undeniably proven favoritism.

When I saw something about Brady destroying his phone I thought he heard the ruling and was all "Fuck this!" and threw his phone against a wall or something.

I'm dumb

I can only see it if Brady does his pre-Super Bowl LET'S GOOOOOOOOO scream beforehand.

Brady likely has no chance in court in any case.  So this rolls on, he loses again, and there's a federal court decision handed down that forever brands him a cheater.

Its really not surprising to me how many Patriots fans completely and utterly fail to grasp that the phone is the key piece of evidence that would have clearly shown which side is lying, and that makes it something a federal court absofuckingloutely would want to see, thus making it a pretty big deal that he destroyed it.   Its not surprising, but still, god damn.

"We're not in court yet, and he did it knowing how it would look and knowing how it would affect a possible court case. So if he decided it was better to do that, then I'm sure he has a reason."
